I was never a Guitar Hero/Rock Band enthusiast. Not that I hate them or anything but I played GH at friend's house for several hours and decided I had more fun failing with a real guitar than playing the plastic ones (I had to fight my real-guitar habits).
But, when they announced Rocksmith... ohh, I was amped!
I got it like 2 months ago and... I still am! There's a lot of game in that game. Learning a song may take a few minutes to tens of hours or a lifetime in case of the Pantera DLC pack ;) There's a very nice feature that allows to practice a segment of the song over and over with control over pace and difficulty. Also, lessons on techniques, minigames and the pretty detailed amp mode where you can create your own amp/pedal set and fool around with creating your own sound. And when you get bored you can always switch to bass-mode (there is a guitar to bass emulation).
The scoring system is pretty forgiving in terms of timing the notes but detects what note you're playing properly. I'm using a cheap Cort Stat2 electric guitar with humming single-coil pickups but I took time to fine-tune every adjustable thing on it, so I guess it's part my work, part the game designers.
One thing that's pretty annoying though is the audio output lag from the guitar - most noticeable and distracting while palm-muting. I ended up muting the guitar output entirely while playing faster songs. I have a PS3 version of the game, dunno if it's better on PC, probably depends heavily on the sound card.
Conclusion: I am not disapointed and having great fun.

Rocksmith, the video game, belongs to Ubisoft.
