I was pleasantly surprised to find myself face-to-face with this little guy in the parking lot at work the other day. Apparently he's one of a family of gray foxes and their two young kits that like to play around the wooden pallets stacked next to the building. He's quite friendly for a wild fox, and let me get to within a few feet before scampering off.

He was surprisingly approachable, though I think petting might have been a bit past his comfort level. He didn't seem to mind the camera, though. :3

Rosenotter's probably right about the mice, foxes would be attracted to prey more than play. That cub letting you get close enough for a picture shows that they feel secure there. Utter niftiness!

I don't doubt there's plenty of mice and moths and other such savory critters for them to hunt, but the way the kits bounce, tussle, leap and generally fly around each other like fuzzy little Slinkys is pure fun time... they remind me of kittens as much as anything. :3

*nod-nod* For canines, foxes are remarkably feline. Maybe it's just form following function, but I wonder if maybe they didn't evolve along their own line from the old miacids and should have their own family, rather than being canidae.
