I don't know, Contra 4 is the only american contra, the others being japanese and called Probotector so that explain everything THOUGH you can play with the probotector in contra 4 actually, they did an exellent job on the 4.
I can't tell which one I prefer between the 3 or the 4, they both have exellents moments but if it's for the challenge i'd pick the 4th one with his awesome challenge mode and bonus.

Hm?... not sure what you mean. Probotector was only for the PAL areas due to the german restriction on games, like how we had Teenage mutant Hero turtles. For the japanese their games were Contras heh. Amusing that we got the anime-robots.

Contra was released in both America and Japan.
Probotector is the European or PAL version of Contra due to the censorship stuff back in the 90's. There is a website somewhere that explains this.
But... I must say that the Probotectors are more fun, since robots kicking (or in the case of my Rubber Nude Probotectors, fucking ;3) alien asses are epic. <3
