Piece from final series for Drawing in Color.
I had fervently researched and budgeted fostering a dog. However, when the Maryland Legislative failed to correct the state's breed specific legislation my plans completely fell through.
We were asked to create a series of work based on a theme, process or issue for our class final. Breed-specific discrimination of pit bull type dogs in MD fit the assignment perfectly.
Identifying a dog's breed and disposition by its appearance is highly ineffective. The Animal Farm Foundation has great resources discussing labels and assumptions of dogs. NOVA's documentary "Dogs Decoded" (available on netflix) gives a great insight on the genetic variety and range of domesticated dogs.

I am sad you couldn't foster, it is the same nightmare here- where they are technically legal but with ridiculous restrictions, and if I happen to drive over the wrong bridge into the next province the dog could be seized and taken from us forever. Unfortunately in the end, we can't take the risks.
The art, however, is lovely.

I'm sorry to hear it's the same where you live. :/ But, it looks like things are starting to turn around . There's definitely much more work that needs to be done, but small steps forward is still very encouraging.
And thanks c:

Holy crap this is simply superb. The colors are brilliant, and the fact that you are showing only the underside is simply amazing! Thats sad to hear about the fostering a dog, I'm live in MD and own 4 dogs. Didn't know there was any weird laws like that. Is it state, or city ordinance?
Thank you so much!
I believe the "pit bull law" is state-wide court order. It's not necessarily a ban, but it does place a high liability on "pure bred pit bull" owners and 3rd parties (such as landlords). In Baltimore, many rental agencies and landlords are installing breed restrictions and owners simply can't keep their dogs, or can't adopt the dogs in need of homes.

That makes alot of sense because cities always have problems in the courts with pitbulls. They are quite good dogs if they are raised right. Its a pity about their bad rep. Any dog can be just as bad as a pitbull can be. I really hate stupid crap like that. My grandparents owned a pair of pitbulls http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9523871/ and they were some of the best dogs you could have. At least it isn't the UK. the UK has bans on pitbulls and if they find out that you have one, they fine you a hefty fine and shoot your dog. Not that Baltimore police is any better. You hear about the prison being run by a gang member that actually got the guards pregnant?
I simply disagree that the ban is effective. The issue at hand is dog attacks and any dog can bite. If I or a loved one were attacked by a dog, I would want to be able to pursue equal legal action, and have the owners be equally liable regardless of breed.
That being stated, however, I don't believe a law of this nature is effective at preventing dog bites/attacks. It's more of a reactive measure. Creating ways for individuals to access knowledge about dog behavior, and training for their companions I believe would be more effective at decreasing potential for dog bites.
Baltimore does have its fair share of problems and setbacks, however I genuinely believe the city has so much potential. it takes a tremendous amount of ingenuity, grit, and patience to create social change. But witnessing the work my colleagues and friends have done within the city, positive change can certainly be accomplished.

Beautifully put. Knowledge about canines would be very helpful, but necessary when handling big dogs. If they put in that measure thought, people will try not to buy pit bulls because they would have to waste money and time having to access the knowledge (as in if the ordinance was "You want to own a pitbull, you need to take a course on handling it").
I hope someday, Nina Simone's song Baltimore, greatest song about Baltimore, will no longer be true. Surprisingly it still a very potent and very accurate description of the Baltimore most do not see and it was made in 1977. Hopefully there will eventually not be a blue light district in the future, hopefully sooner than later. Which part you from btw (if this is too personal, just let me know)? I don't live in baltimore myself, but I went to UMBC and was in the city alot.

Yes, yes. Some of the rescue groups I've been following do a great job helping new owners understand their dogs. C:
I study at MICA so that's by Bolton Hill/Midtown/Station North. So I actually only live there part year and haven't been in Balti so long. But we tend to do a lot of work in the city, especially being in the sustainability/social practice tract.

o awesome stuff. I've been many places around the city from the inner harbor to past mlk jr blvd and bel air rd and all those types o places. I actually tried to get into the city from UMBC during the ravens parade. Took 3 hours to get into the city, couldn't get a parking space after an hour+ searchin, so I had to go home hahaha. I haven't been to your area though, but would love to see MICA someday as there are alot of furries there (I've never met another fur XD). Do you know what I mean when I referred to blue light district?
Ooff haha I can imagine the parade was crazy- it was insane right after the ravens won haha.
:atmus23: is the man to talk to about MICAfurs. He practically hand picks us out from orientation haha. There's not a ton of us though- only 4 or so at the moment. Delaware's furbowl is a great place to meet more local people in the fandom.

I've talked to him b4 cuz he is a fellow photographer hahaha but he is hard to actually get ahold of, he is rarely on skype and is usually busy. Delaware is a good long haul for me. lol like 2 hours 22 minutes says google XD and thought there were more there than that lol I thought since its a large art community there would be. This guy here goes to MICA if you didn't know http://www.furaffinity.net/user/national And our school actually lit the library purple after the win, where its still lit that way today XD
ah this is wonderful! i volunteered in a baltimore animal shelter two semesters ago and it ripped my heart to shreds seeing the sweetest pitties be overlooked time and time again because of md's bsl. hopefully soon maryland will realize that punishing the dog for animal cruelty is about as regressive as legislation gets
