Two friends singin' and relaxin' down on da bayou.
I actually have "Megapython vs. Gatoroid" to thank for this, since it got me in the mood to draw a gator. XD
Just some stuff I've been working on to help flesh out my childrens book illustration portfolio. I'm rather pleased with how the coloring turned out in this (at least on the characters) but I feel like the background might be a bit overwhelming. Critique is greatly appreciated, since I will be having my portfolio critiqued by a professional in about a month so anything I can do to fix things beforehand would help. :>

The possum's my favorite too. I imagine him as having a really thick Cajun accent but fancying himself a great singer. XD
And thanks for the critique! I still haven't figured out a technique for drawing backgrounds that I'm happy with, so I always kinda rush em, but I'll probably go back and polish this one up. :>

Looks wonderful Kaz, I love that gator
Just my two cents; The background is busy, it should be being a swamp, but because of the pallet you've used it doesn't take over the image. I guess its really up to how much of a emphasis you want on the characters. Personally, I feel if you added any more detail to the background you might loose some of the impact they have. Maybe just adding a little bit of the yellow light from the gator's belly to the mid-ground (first layer of trees) would add more depth but really I like it the way it is and sometimes adding more can ruin things.

AW MAN I love this so much!! That gator is so cute! I love how you drew his fat, he looks so soft and squishy. <3 It's so cute how it blankets around his lil foot, aw.
As far as the background goes; It might help if it used more solid/simple shapes instead of so many semi-transparent lines! You did a really good job at keeping it out of focus so it sits behind the characters, so I would try to hang onto that. But maybe introducing some darker or lighter shades as the trees go bath further (depending on what color you wanted it to fade out into) could help push it back more while giving it some depth.
BUT YEAH THIS IS STILL SO GOOD. ;_; I would totally read a book about these two.
