Chainmail, thankfully, is comparitively lightweight - light enough for someone as physically fit as Theran to keep himself afloat while wearing though, even if he'd rather avoid getting metal and leather wet for obvious reasons. As for keeping himself + someone else up... that's another matter altogether.
Keep in mind this is the same Theran who's disarmed a Golem (pun intended) barehanded, kicked a door so hard it brained a guy on the other side, and smashed a hole in a marble wall. He can manage swimming in some light-ish armour. XD If he was wearing his usual full platemail he'd probably have problems keeping afloat for more than a minute or so, and wouldn't do so by choice if he had to, but he can manage some chainmail and a big axe for a bit. Long enough to find a bit of shoreline to climb onto :P
