Oasis
By Psion
For the Adipose City Universe
Name: Al Ain (Oasis in English)
Territory: A corp consisting of high-tech nomads, Al Ain is able to project themselves deep into other corporations territories making it hard to accurately estimate their strength and sphere of influence. Foreign analyists approximate that the company has control of the Arabian pennisula and trade pacts with the Military Republic of Israel.
Description: When the oil market collapsed, the Middle East went bankrupt virtually overnight. Once the wealthiest region in the world, chaos reigned and much of the Near East went completely dark. Believing that the fires of anarachy and sectarian warfare had consumed the native population, the six major corporations of the post-oil world turned to their own territories. It wasn’t until Italiana decided to explore the region, hungry for an advantage over its rival Aristo, that it was discovered the Middle East was far from empty…
Factual reports regarding the origins of Al Ain are hard to come by. Company employees are horribly infamous for embellishing tales of their origins, a practice the entire corporation is suspected of encouraging. Despite their mysterious efforts at misdirection, outsiders have been able to deduce a few things about their origins. Al Ain began its life as a small religious movement somewhere in the Arabic pennisula during the heated days before the petroleum crash destroyed the region. The specifics of what happened next have been lost in the Peak Oil crisis but what is known is that the proto-corp was driven deep into the desert miles away from civilization by the ruling powers at the time.
While intended to be a death sentence, the exile actually worked to Al Ain’s benefit. Isolation from civilization allowed time for reflection and it shielded them from the worst of the collapse. After that, details begin to get muddled. Whatever trials and tribulations Al Ain faced before turning into the corporate power it is today, the company is focused on keeping them to itself for now.
Corporate Goals: Oasis’s goals are perhaps the simpliest and most straight forward of the corporations, they want to build themselves (and subsequently rebuild the Middle East) into the same kind of economic powerhouse they were during the Petroleum Age. To that end they profess holding no vendetta against the European and American powers over pre-peak conflicts. In their mind, the old governments of America and Europe are as dead or impotent as the empires of their own forebearers and conflict with the powers of the new world is counter-productive. Though of course that doesn’t mean the Al Ain are without teeth…
Mindset: The typical Al Ain agent is friendly and personable, in some respects a post-oil version of the Arab Trader. Shrewd negotiators, Al Ain agents are unique in that they’re not just enforcers and technical experts, they’re also the majority of the merchants and logistic specialists that help keep the company running. Yet what would truly surprise a person of the Pre-Peak age is their moderatism. The insular culture, theocratic government, and state-backed sexism… none of it exists in the Al Ain. They still keep to the tenets of their faith; they pray, both male and female dress modestly in public spaces (privately is rumored to be a different matter entirely,) and they observe all the holidays and other tenats of their faith.
Operational Method: Fairly nomadic outside of their Middle Eastern territories, Oasis is largely decentralized. Most of the company operations center around the caravan, a small group of corporate employees and their families living in either a convoy of several vehicles or one massive landship. Due to their mechanized nature, Road Hogs and Big Tools are significantly more important to the company’s daily operation then other corporations.
Subsidiaries: Al Ain doesn’t maintain any named subsidaries, the Oasis name represents all of its interests. That said, the company is involved in several sectors in addition to selling ethnic cuisine.
Logistics- Bulk shipping of goods and parcels between cities or continents is one of the corporation’s primary sources of income. While the corps have their own services and freelancers handle a lot of the intra-city transportation, Al Ain managed to carve a niche for themselves in the market between.
Trade- One of the oldest professions, Al Ain camps run small market places where rare or hard to find commodities can be found. While the company itself refuses to get involved in the slave trade, it’s rumored that less ethical individuals try to hide their business underneath the skirt of Oasis’s cotton robes.
Vehicle Manufacture- While this is primarily concentrated in their stationary settlements in the Middle East, Al Ain is fairly involved in vehicle manufacture. Specialized in larger vehicles and macro engineering, Oasis vehicles are enormous, rugged machines with hybrid fuel systems designed for traveling the most forsaken parts of the planet.
Technology: Mobility and portability are the main key words when talking about Al Ain’s technology. When buying equipment from other corporations, they tend to look for tools that could be easily stuffed into a pocket or backpack. When designing it themselves, Oasis builds it to function off the back of a truck or van. Unlike the other corps, the Arabs have not developed much in the way of food production. Their limited arable land is optimized by last generation SALAD and PanAsian technology and rumors that they have developed mobile food processing plants for “poaching” the harvests of other corporations are unconfirmed.
