I work on so many layers, one for main color in case i screw up and then copy that to try shadows and later copy that one and add light. that way if i screw it up i can go one layer back and repeat. but I am trying to illustrate using less layers and just fix those screw ups within the same layer.
That's a good technique. In the end you should just draw the way that suits you the most. It's always healthy to experiment with new techniques, but there is no right way to do it, this step-by-step is just one of many different ways I paint, probably in the future I will be doing it somewhat differently.
