The main carousel at Knoebel's Grove (of 2) has an old fashioned feature to it: It has an extendable arm loaded with brass rings, and riders mounted on the outer fourth tier of horses (oufitted with special stirrups for leaning out) can reach and attempt to grab rins with each pass. After the arm is retracted, the passengers can attempt to toss the rings into a target while employees look on. The rider with the most successful ring shots earns a free ride :D Its old things like this that make Knoebel's Stand out. While more modern amusement and theme parks would scoff at an idea like this or perhaps would be too fearful of injury and lawsuit, Knoebel's keeps with tradition. This only helps add a certain cozyness and nostalgic feeling which (personally) bring with it an air of ease and enjoyment.

Pretty much all the other carousels did away with this back in the 70s. Partly to save money, as one less empployee to keep it going, and mostly due to increasing insurance costs.
Usually there were lots of iron rings that were basically worthless. Then there were the brass rings, which got you a prize, usually a free ride or a stuffed animal. some of them had other colored rings for more prizes.

Yea. I should have mentioned, once in awhile they use the old brass rings, most of them now ARE in fact the iron ones. Some folks are so enamored by this that they choose not to toss the ring and keep it as a souvenir. This has become almost expected by the park and they have TONS of replacement rings (Many years ago I got to tour the park from the employee perspective, though I never worked for them) :p
