Not the best, but a hell of a lot better than 10-15 years later...
In the mid to late 70's GMs weren't exactly perfect, but being as simple as they were it was possible to keep one running for years to come with nothing more than a screwdriver, pair of channel locks, and a hammer. Maybe a few beers too... lol The ones from the late 80s through the 90s were complete and total bullshit. Prime example, as of now I have a 91 regal sitting behind my house with 89k miles and a blown tranny with a marginal headgasket... My 63 LeSabre had 215k on it and ran like a fucking champ.
The 70s weren't great, but were a hell of a lot better than the late 80s-mid 90s.

Sure, they rusted and all the small stuff broke, and smog carbs were terrible. But mechanically, these things were solid. There's not much that can kill a GM big block with low compression and a Cretaceous-era fluid-driven automatic behind it. Rust killed way more of these things than anything else.
