Once, a long time ago, there was a large forest, far away from any human habitation. Creatures that humans had never seen lived here, and one of the biggest was a large, blue dragon.
Now, this one was wild, but intelligent on a human level, like any dragon. His scales were a bright, almost sapphire blue, his horns were almost ruler straight, and his tail ended with some spikes. For now, those spikes were soft and of little use; they were for defense. His name was Lance.
The Blue Dragon was circling over the evergreen forest, looking for his next meal. The Forest was starting to become rather bare of any creature. But why? Lance didn’t know.
He landed on a rocky outcropping in the middle of a opening in the trees. A rabbit scurried past him, and it was quickly grabbed and eaten. But it was just a rabbit, and Dragons have big stomaches. His still growled at him like an angry dog.
'What must I do for a reasonable meal around here?’ Lance muttered. Sure, fall was approaching and the few leafy trees in the forest were turning red; this meant some animals would migrate away. But there was always plenty left, even during the winter! So what’s changed?
Lance took another look around, to try to spot a few animals around to eat. None to speak off. He laid his head down and drifted to sleep, basking in the warmth of the sun.
'Hey... Hey, wake up.’ A soft voice said. Lance woke up and nearly smacked heads against another male dragon. This one was black with a purple underbelly and stripes. His horns were a bit more curved that Lance’s, and his tail ended in one big spike. He nudged a small deer’s carcass too him, as in an offering. This other dragon was courting him, not caring about gender. Lance didn’t care either- he actually like other males more, but he was unsure.
'Er, thanks...’ Lance muttered, gratefully chewing on a piece of the deer. The other Dragon tore off a leg.
'Name’s Kalith. You were Lance, yes?’ The dragon asked.
'Yeah- wait, how’d you know my name?’ Lance asked.
'There’s not many dragons in the area, you know. I’ve put all of their names in my memory. You’re the one I like the most, though. Join me?’ Kalith replied.
'I don’t know...’ Lance replied, hesitantly. He started walking off into the forest, towards his own, small cave that was a good distance away. There was a strong wind, and so flying would be difficult. Lance decided to walk, and Kalith followed.
'Hey, what’s the harm? It’s a free forest.’ Kalith said.
'Yeah, I know.’ Lance said. He was deliberately holding off to get more free things.
'What do I have to offer you, Lance? Power, gold, food, what? I have all kinds of things. Gold from the Humans, stashed food aplenty, power over this forest and the ability to get more. I know your cave’s small, mine’s quite large. What do you say?’
'I don’t know, I think I’ll need to sleep on it.’ Lance said, suddenly taking flight.
'I’ll be back in that field, Lance! Meet me there!’ Kalith shouted. Lance needed a rest. His day was full of unsuccessful hunting and now being courted.
A half an hour later he landed in his cave- a small, cozy one- and fell soundly asleep, his mind on Kalith.
Lance woke up the next day to light rain- it was late, too. Really overslept. Lance flew down into the forest, looking for food and some extra supplies to spruce up his cave. On the Search, he decided to see if Kalith was in the field like he said he would be. A short while later, he landed and Kalith walked from the forest, a buck in his mouth. he dropped it down.
'Hungry?’ He asked. Lance nodded, and he started eating. 'So, what does it take to get you as a mate? Power? We could rule this forest together. Gold? I have half a ton piled up and spread around my cave. Delicacies? I have Everything. Anything. I know a few humans that are friendly to dragons, And they can help get those! Boar. Gazelle. White Elk. It doesn’t matter how exotic it is, I can get it.’ Kalith said. Lance licked his lips at the thought of White Elk, which was the caviar of dragons.
'Oh, I don’t know... I’m going to go find some items to decorate my cave. I guess you’re following?’ Lance asked. Kalith nodded.
'Not going anywhere without you until I finally court you properly.’ Kalith replied as they took flight. The rain wasn’t hard, and nor was the wind. It was smooth sailing.
'So, where are you going to, Lance? I’m interested.’ Kalith said while they were flying.
'There’s an old human castle a few miles away. It’s treasure hold was long ago raided, but I’m sure that they hid more treasure all throughout it.’ Lance replied. 'I don’t know what they called it, but it was quite large, and the underground halls were really wide.’
Kalith was silent for a second, thinking. then he laughed quite loudly. 'Gunthorpe Keep! Hah, that old thing? I have no clue why the hell it was abandoned because it was well before my time, and it was quit legendary.’ They landed and quickly scared two lonely human treasure-hunters, who quick ran off into the woods screaming about getting barbecued. Lance blew a playful smoker ring at them, and scared on so much he fell flat on his face. He quickly got up and kept running. Both of the dragons had a laugh.
'Silly humans, castles are for dragons! The old, decrepid ones, at least.’ Lance said, he jumped into a hole in the ground that led to the underground halls, and Kalith quickly came in behind.
‘As I was saying, Gunthorpe Keep was a legendary castle because of its defenses. Its men were enduring loyal, its defenses very well designed, and the walls were a good twenty feet thick. Until people started stealing their bricks, thinking they were enchanted with good luck. Gunthorpe’s doors were metal, forged in some of the largest forges in the land. Also, the big doors to certain special rooms could be opened only from the inside, like the treasury. Gunthorpe must of fallen somehow, and the invaders tried to break into the armory. Problem was, the door was a grid of three foot thick metal bars with spaces only a foot wide. And it could only be opened from the inside by a pair of guards that was always posted in there.’
'So whoever was control Gunthorpe made sure that the gold didn’t get into the wrong hands. Neat! But why do you know this?’ Lance asked.
'To impress you.’ Kalith admitted as they kept walking. 'I found the treasure room and actually broke down the door after about ten minutes of trying. That’s where my half a ton of gold came from.’ Kalith said as they stopped at the gate. Now that Lance looked at the massive hole in the equally more massive gate, he realized that a dragon of their size fit right in, like one had rammed it down. 'So come on, join me then! By my partner. We can rule this forest, and you’ll have all of the things you’ve ever wanted!’ Kalith said as they walked out.
'I may just end up doing so. you did mention White Elk...’ Lance said as they climbed back out. It was raining harder. Lance was suddenly knocked square on the snout by a baseball-sized hailstone! 'Ow!’ He exclaimed, covering his bruised nose with his front claws.
'Come on, my cave’s closer. I’ve also got some White Elk, still fresh.’ Kalith said. A smaller hailstone bounced off his head, and he barely flinched. Lance agreed, and they started flying through the downpour.
they skidded to a halt in Kalith’s well lit cave, aching from the hail and a little sore from all the hard flying. They ended up in a little heap, laughing.
‘Hehehe...' Lance muttered.
Kalith chuckled. ‘I’ll go grab us some food.'
Lance nudged up against Kalith playfully, quite happy on where he was. Kalith, in turn, untangled himself and walked over to a chamber that branched off. A few seconds later, he dragged out a White Elk, perfectly skinned and fixed on a mat made from young pine branches.
'Amazing! You really do have a lot!’ Lance exclaimed. It wasn’t just the elk, but the fact that he had massive bed-like mats for himself and Lance (Kalith obviously was prepared), and gold items tastefully decorating the walls. Kalith knocked a large gold crown onto one of his horns. Lance was stunned. Kalith even had carried a small chariot up here to hold some of his valuable stones.
'Well, you going to eat or just stare at the gold? Come on then!’ The purple dragon said. They both dug into the delicacy, quite pleased with each other. It was going to be a fun night.
Lance woke up, happy and in Kalith’s caress. The sun was shining bright, birds were singing, and the dew shined off of the fines that rimmed the entrance to Kalith’s cave. It was a beautiful day in more ways than one. The two dragons hoped it would stay that way.
'Kalith, hun, I’m going to go hunt us some food. I’ll be back, I promise.’ Lance said.
'Come back safe, will you?’ Kalith said.
'I promise!’ Lance shouted, taking a running flight from the cave. Kalith stretched on his mat.
‘Finally, a mate. Oh, such a great day! A time to rejoice. Thank god for my success.’ Kalith said to himself. He leaned back and fell asleep.
