Lycanthropy does not mean "Wolf Man". Literally, or otherwise. The word is based on the myth of King Lycaon of Arcadia who was punished by the gods for the sin performing human sacrifice in their name. Lycaon tried to feed the flesh of a murdered child to Zeus, who in turn punished him by striking down his blood line, and turning him to the form of a wolf. Another telling that Lycaon and all his blood line were turned to ravenous wolves and driven from the city by his own guard..
Man of Lycaon. Or Son of Lycaon.. The word was invented by a psychologist, and this was his inspiration.
Bur beyond that, yes... Technically speaking a Lycanthrope is only a were wolf, and the "were-*insert animal here*" thing is a modern invention in the last 20 or 30 years.. There have always been myths of animals that could turn from man into animal.. But it is seldom that in these stories it is seen as a curse.. Where as in Were Wolves, it is depicted that the man suffers for the mindless hunger of the wolf..

It's true back in the old days Lycanthrope was more used to describe Werewolf. But now adays it refers to a human that can turn into any animal, not just wolf.
What we have here is a Were Donkey.
