Saw this big fellow on the screen door the other day. I didn't snap a picture at first and regretted it so I can back looking for it and found it in the same spot. I thought the poor thing died as it didn't make any movements. I heard some moths have short lives and that was it for the fella but it moved later in the day when my brother poked it.
I love the pattern on the wings. Quite striking isn't it? I did a search and found its species as a Vine Sphinx Moth. This one is around 3 inches, the biggest moth I have seen so far by far.

Its certainly a cutie. I did an image search on Oleander Hawk Moth and it doesn't match. However, Vine Sphinx is dead on, a perfect match. Here is one of the pics I found http://bugguide.net/node/view/330072 .
Don't be. It took me a long while to find the right species after looking though literally hundreds of potential ones. nAt least that bug-finger site did break it down with check boxes. There are so many kinds of moths with crazy wing patterns out there. All I usually see around here are the boring little brown ones with a few grey ones here and there. This is the first time one really stood out.
