Someone was kind enough to sponsor this fellow to get colored and finished up! I was shocked, but thrilled :D I haven't gotten to draw aliens and get PAID for it in, like. . . nearly my entire life.
This fellow here is a Thrask, a species of my own creation. I can't spill too much about them here, because I'm currently running a game in which this guy is an actual character aboard the group's ship, but I can drop some species details -
-Thrask are arboreal. Before they evolved to a point at which they were intelligent enough to form a society, they lived most of their lives in trees. Their heavily muscled forearms and legs are meant for climbing the massive trunks of the blue/green, leafy trees on their planet. Their upper plates and body are good camouflage against them, if spotted from above. Their tails are prehensile, and used to secure themselves to branches when they sleep.
-Thrask evolved on a planet orbiting a dying sun, which is in the earliest stages of swelling to a red giant. The planet is almost perpetually bathed in a crimson sky, thus the red/yellow underbelly this fellow here is sporting. When seen from below, they blend in with the sky.
-The longest digit with the oversized claw on their hands is used for prying loose bark from their chosen trees, and their long tongues are used to get at the sap beneath. Thrask survive almost entirely on the rich tree sap, supplementing here and there with leaves and other vegetation.
-Thrask are entirely herbivorous. The large 'fangs' the males sport are actually tusks, used only for defense.
-Only male Thrask have horns, but both males and females have dorsal spines. The spines are used for young Thrask to secure themselves to their parents while they are still too young to climb.
-The male sex organ resides safely inside their carapace. But Thrask do have external testes, in order to keep them cool enough to remain fertile.
-After a vicious war with the Cjaffa, a race of destructive alien zealots, the Thrask homeworld of Verna was bombed into a nuclear winter. Now scattered across the galaxy, Thrask have become an endangered species. Despite settlement attempts and the founding of 'New Verna', their gene pool has been diminished so severely, the race has become too homogeneous to sustain itself. Several genetic projects have risen up in an attempt to diversify Thrask bloodlines and save the race, but most Thrask are opposed to them, preferring instead to die off with their honor intact, rather than become a 'manufactured race'.
-Thrask value their family, known as 'clans', and their bloodlines as deeply as some races would religion. A Thrask prays to his/her ancestors, and the race as a whole claims to pull strength from the generations before them. Clans live, work, and fight together in tight-knit groups, very seldom mixing unless it is for purposes of trade, mate-bonding or uniting together to face a common adversary or threat. Unfortunately, it is this clan unity that caused their current genetic crisis. When Verna was destroyed, only a few warships and clans on the surface survived the devastation and were able to flee to safety, and those that did fled as family groups. Entire warships containing one bloodline escaped, as opposed to ships with a mixed crew. All said, less than 100 bloodlines survived the near destruction of their race, and now those bloodlines have been depleted further by scattering and the ravages of resettlement. The fear of inbreeding has been so rampant, repopulation has been slow, and the race is dwindling to a flicker. Most prefer to face their extinction solemnly, rather than riling against it through genetic alteration, which creates Thrask with no true ancestors, and thus, as far as most Thrask are concerned. . . no soul.
This guy here is named Haruva Revelgar. I'll get more into him as things about him are revealed in my game!
And by all means, if someone out there likes this dude enough that they'd like to see a full, and. . . perhaps. . . anatomically-complete rendition of him. . . toss a couple of bucks my way, and I'll make it happen ;) I never considered having anything 'sponsored' before, but this was hella fun, and I'd love to expand on it.

Some of the details and portions of the back-story make me think of Hork-Bajir from the Animorphs series, but that's probably just because that's where my mind is.
Hork-Bajir were reptilian-looking, had natural horns and blades, lived in trees, and peeled bark, though they actually ate the bark instead of the sap underneath. Their Homeworld was also destroyed by aliens, but under much different circumstances. They were purposely genetically engineered by another race on their homeworld to be simple-minded though. Either way, I find this drawing strangely-appealing. But then I find Hork-Bajir strangely-appealing and this guy makes me think of them, so yeah. Sweet work either way.

I used to draw nothing but, but. . . I have to make a living, you know? Sci Fi and Fantasy are hard settings to make a footprint in, their marketplace is so overrun with amazing artists as it is (like say. . . you guys :P) I love drawing furries, and honestly, aliens and anthro animals are pretty much along the same vein, as far as I'm concerned, but aliens just haven't ever had as much of a market for me. I'd really love to do a Sci-Fi comic some day, with my own original alien species. I just don't think I could live off the proceeds the way I do with furry comics. It's something I'd love to test someday, though, when I'm financially secure enough that I could afford to fail.
He is really amazing. I particularly love his head ornament. As cool as a design as it is, I can't think of how to make one in 3D. I might try making a female though, since they lack the horns...or my muse gets up off its ass and figures out how to make that amazing crest.
I don't suppose he needs a mount? Just an odd thought.

The way he opens his mouth and drinks is very interesting and creative. :3
I also like the softness of it, makes it look like it's on an old scroll.
Course, being the verile homo that I am, I can't help but wonder what he looks like when he's...... excited. *hint hint wink wink* Hehe. ^#^
