This data relates specifically to the original prototype of the Arwing series, shown only in the Nintendo Power comics. The data is no necessarily canon, as it is based mostly upon my own estimates, so don't chew me out if you don't like it.
History (also not canon!);
Shortly after Andross was exiled to the planet Venom, the Cornerian Army put forth a requirement for a new Air Superiority Fighter (the "Space Fighter, eXperimental" project, or "SFX")to bolster their chronically under-equipped Air Corps. This force consisted primarily of the aging Bulldog Tactical Fighter, which in spite of it's superb flight performance was considered lacking in range, firepower, and shielding.
However, the geopolitical climate in Corneria at the time was not favorable towards defense spending, as Corneria had good diplomatic relations with the other worlds in the Lylat System, and had not been involved in any combat in recent years.
As such, few companies --- despite Corneria's booming industry --- stepped forward to meet the challenge. Most investors and politicians did not like the idea of building up the military when there was no clear and present danger, so there was very little defense spending to support such a project.
Arspace Dynamics, headed by noted engineer Beltino Toad, was the only company to respond with anything more than blueprints. Rather, a mock-up of a long, narrow, triangular fighter was unveiled, along with an assortment of devices that could be built into a flyable version.
This was obviously the Army's only chance at acquiring a new model of fighter in the foreseeable future, so they threw in their lot with Arspace Dynamics.
The new fighter, christened the "Arwing", was not without it's problems; it's long, narrow wings proved fragile, the new "G-Diffuser" technology easily disoriented pilots in the simulators, and the initial Fly-By-Wire software algorithms proved inadequate to properly stabilize the fighter. While the software issues were fixed, the Arwing remained a difficult aircraft to fly, with unforgiving flight characteristics and overwhelming agility --- very few Army Air Corps pilots earned clearance in the simulators to fly the Arwing, and none proved able to fully control it in real flight.
After several repairs following the Arwing's first "flights", it was grounded, pending an overview of the project. As luck would have it, this is about the time when the Army became aware of a new and belligerent armed force, growing in power in Lylat --- it was established and commanded by none other than Andross.
With this discovery the Arwing program was immediately re-opened, and the Army cleared Arspace Dynamics to employ civilian pilots to test-fly the Arwing, if necessary.
They found just such a pilot in Fara Phoenix, a teenager with a capricious and impulsive personality, but also a child prodigy. She effortlessly mastered the Arwing, and from her flights a wealth of data from real, physical flight in the Arwing was gained.
These flights continued even as Low-Rate Initial Production (LRIP) on the perfected Arwing began --- and just in time, as Andross' assault across Lylat had just begun.
By the time Andross began to lay siege on Corneria, only 4 LRIP Arwings had been completed, so Starfox --- the only other pilots available who were considered able to immediately fly the Arwing --- were brought to Corneria.
While Fara was sortied to act as Starfox's fight instructor in their first Arwing flight, Andross' forces surprised and attacked nearby Corneria City, and both Fara and Starfox were diverted to intercept them.
While the five Arwings soon overwhelmed the invaders, a reckless attack by Fara failed and left her fighter stricken. She ejected and survived before it crashed, leaving no salvageable remains of the only SFX-variant Arwing ever built.
