A full illustration for
spottacus of their character of the same name. This was an interesting commission, lots of work, but a fun concept. It was nice working on an illustration that is was a bit less focused on just showing off the character.

Twinkle of stars, whisper of wind, the heat of the day bleeding off, pheromones of prey do send,
Creak of branch, feet on grass, spear lifted with obsidian sharp, waiting for stillness to pass,
Eyes atwinkle, heart athunder, fluttering tails, young hunter in contemplation of preys wonder,
The moment comes, the spear is raised, feline launches, and eyes now blazed,
A stab, a thrust, a scream, blood colored like rust,
A hunter crouches, over his prey, gives thanks to the gods, for food this day...

I do draw herbivore anthros, but I felt that in this situation, where there is a hunting implication, that the use of anthro targets would make this feel more like murder/assassination rather than hunting for food, which is a bit darker than I'd like for this particular piece. Thank you though!
Agreed. It's almost like Egyptian art, or Picasso, where the eye is shown face-on instead of in profile, even when the face is seen in profile. This would be a stunningly detailed, gorgeous piece, if only my eye weren't always drawn to the improper foreshortening/angle of the face. The way the composition flows, I just can't stop staring at Spottacus' face. I'd be happy to redline the face for you, Rhyu, but given your proof of superb art skills, I'm sure you could fix it yourself it were bothersome enough to you/the commissioner ^^;
The fur/markings/back detail is fantastic, and I really enjoy the blue glow of the moon in contrast with all warm colours :)

Is there supposed to be fire behind the serval? Due to the light source coming from behind him and the rather warm tones on him, and considering it's night, the protagonist doesn't look fully integrated to the scene, he stands out too much and differs from the rest of the pallete, I'm not sure how to put it in better words >.>; The cold tones on his tail tip are wonderful and looks just right.
Is there a specific reason for the saturated red in the sky? I would like to comment on it but if there's a reason behind it I'll shut up :B
And damn that head angle! It's very hard to get the foreshortening right. I know you fixed it, I was going to comment on how flat it looked before, but now the eye pops out in a weird way. You're giving us one angle with the back of his head yet the face/muzzle appears to follow a different angle; judging by the neck the head doesn't look rotated enough to allow the face appear like that. Lacking of better word I found some photographs that may explain better what I'm trying to say http://24.media.tumblr.com/3aa4ddba.....bqmo1_1280.jpg
hope it helps and hope you don't mind me being this nitpicking >.>;

Its actually not supposed to be full night, but rather sunset, with the sunset behind the character (which is why there is that red glow on the edges and the lighting from the back is so yellow/warm) so that we see the already dark part of the sky. The spear also hints at the setting sun behind him with a reflection of the sunset.
As for the face, yes its not quite right, thank you for the references.
