For our friends from The United Kingdom (thats England, kids
Here is a nice grouping I bought today.
From the left, a silhoette of Horatio Nelson.
In the center, a fairly large chunk of his Flagship, the HMS VICTORY, of the Battle of Trafalgar, October 21, 1805..
The color picture to the left is an original miniature oil painting of Lord Nelson, for which he sat while alive.
Lord Nelson was THE DUDE! He was a famous seaman, and lost his arm as a young fellow (if memory serves me) First in the hearts of his men, his country and of course the ladies of early 19th century England!
England still has a statue of the man atop a really big monument at Trafalgar Square
.
I am, as a novice student of maritime history, pleased and honored to own this group.

I almost forgot! If you want to get a good idea of maritime combat at sea during the 19th century, watch the movie MASTER AND COMMANDER, THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD.
This movie encompasses several of the novels by Patrick Obrian, featuring his character Lucky Jack Aubrey. And one of my favorite flicks....
I am on the fourth of his novels, there are around 17 of them. Great novels, considered the greatest seafaring fiction in the world, and a great peek at the lingo, ships of the line and politics of the day!

When Britain fi-i-irst, at heaven's command,
Aro-o-o-ose from out the a-a-a-zure main,
Arose, arose, arose from out the a-azure main,
This was the charter, the charter of the land,
And guardian a-a-angels sang this strain:
Rule Britannia!
Britannia rule the waves
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.
Rule Britannia!
Britannia rule the waves.
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.
The nations, no-o-o-o-ot so blest as thee,
Must i-i-i-i-in their turn, to ty-y--yrants fall,
Must in their turn, to ty-y-rants fall,
While thou shalt flourish, shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and e-e-e-e-nvy of them all.
Rule Britannia!
Britannia rule the waves.
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.
Rule Britannia!
Britannia rule the waves.
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves.
I have always liked that song, but I did not expect it from an Aussie!
None the less, the Brits kicked some major ass while floating about in ships.
We learned a lot from them, and became pretty fair kickers of asses ourselves.
Sometimes with ships... sometimes with other stuff.

thinking of which, i got some groovy wargames rules for the "French and Indan Wars" (or, in the civiised world, "The Seven Years War"). Arr -British highlanders and Marines shoulder to shoulder with the boys from the colonies, fighting the Perfidious French. what could be more fun?
