I watched The Great Mouse Detective today, for the first time in years. I was expecting to be disappointed, because often movies I watch in my childhood turn out to be not as good as I remember (that happened with The Secret of Nimh yesterday ). Fortunately though, I was pleasantly surprised. Basil of Baker Street (who I had quite the crush on, back in the day) is still supremely awesome. It's also fun because now that I've actually read some Sherlock Holmes books, I can recognize the nods to the original that they stuck in there.
This is the final fight scene on the clock, which I thought was particularly thrilling. I love how furious Ratigan gets, and the ticking sounds of the clock are quite a mood-setter.
Anyway, I recommend this movie. Two thumbs up.

two mice went up the clock
the clock struck one
and the other escaped with minor injuries...
Well done! I love how this turned out
I will say that I have enjoyed most cartoon movies I saw when I was a kid. The one that really disappointed me was watching the animated Transformers movie again--

The problem with movies we have loved in the past is not the movies themselves, but our own perception changing over time. If we but look at these movies once again through the eyes of a child, they remain what we have loved before.
I still love Secret Of NIMH and others such as this movie for their wonderful art and story telling. Though now my adult mind adds another enjoyment to it because in many of these children's movies is some rather pornographic possibilities. In this scene Ratigan is only wearing two pieces of clothing, if the fight had lasted much longer I'm sure he would have ended up stark naked. ;)
lol

Haha, oh boy.. I try mostly to avoid putting children's movies into a sexual context, mostly because part of the reason I like watching children's movies is to experience that kind of innocence again. Though, I can understand the allure. The relationship between Basil and Ratigan would be interesting to explore if you were going to go deep and dark. :)
Actually I can separate the innocence aspects from the erotic ones. I see the erotic possibilities but do not let them ruin the innocence aspects of the movies. It is a balancing act. And even if one was not to delve into things, wouldn't a villain love to rape a hero? As it would be so degrading and humiliating to the hero, especially if they began to enjoy it.
I have read the original book that the movie is based upon, Disney not having much in the way of true imagination for original movies. But I cannot recall how close to the book the movie came. Most movie companies like Disney sugar up the actual story, instead of following the book closely. Like in the case of The fox and the hound. The book was quite different from the movie.

Yeah, they do that a lot, there's also Bambi, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella.. pretty much every movie they've ever made. :) It doesn't really bother me too much unless it sacrifices the point of the entire story, which I don't think they've done so far. But I didn't know Mouse Detective was based on a book other than Sherlock Holmes.. what's it called? :D
