I find the angry reaction of some americans to whistleblowers who point out government crimes, to be very strange. Not anger at the government, no - anger at the whistleblowers who dared point out crimes being committed against them, those selfsame people!
Joseph Goebbels was a rank amateur compared to the modern day masters of propaganda. What do they call themselves, "spin doctors"?

As far as Snowden, I don't think he did anyone wrong. As far as I know, he wasn't distributing information that would compromise lawful commerce. On the other hand, what Manning leaked, as far as I know, could put both soldiers and private citizens at risk, while little of it actually was particularly helpful.
Of course, I could have bad information on any of that, but based on what I do know that's my thoughts on it.

I'm not aware of anything Snowden himself did that has compromised international relations, though maybe I missed that. I know that Russia and China aren't happy about some of what Obama has claimed, that he shouldn't have to talk to them to get Snowden extradited, along with the Syrian conflict.
So you are pro people giving away the US' secrets just because they say it points out that the US was doing wrong. Never mind the fact that even if it is proof they are doing wrong all this information does is damage the reputation of the US and possibly give those that would harm the US information to do so easier. Weither it be another government or terrorists. You know... What he did is called Treason. Not that whiny 'I know whats better' sheep would know what it means to care about the country they live in. All they care about is what 'THEY ARE TOLD' is wrong by the media morons.
Who watches the Watchers, Dear Sir? What good is a law when only some follow it? When does the Fourteenth Amendment stop providing Equal Protection Under The Law?
The fault, dear Rexx, lies not with our reputation amongst the world's nations, but with our own government's self importance being called out.
The Founding Fathers of the United States of America were also treasonous to King George III you might recall.

Of course our founding fathers were treasonous. Heck, a number of them would have been out and out amoral bastards by comparison to some of the folks today. But if you're going to site them, find one that's not morally objectionable. I certainly don't look to them for guidance in this day and age. Heck, I'd probably punch more than few of them in the dick for a number of things they did. I mean, some of them wanted to simply be free of trade regulations, while others felt they were being unjustly taxed, and some felt that their bottom lines were being threatened by products from the homeland that were cheaper than the smuggled stuff they were bringing in.
As for who watches the watcher... The legal system is still there, you're still protected from being "gone after". They look at your emails and find something you'd rather not someone see. What can they do? Nothing without a warrent, and you'll still be subject to the same laws you'd normally be subject to as they're still under the same requirements to prove that you're a bad, bad naughty person.
Just don't skip bail. You apparently forfeit all your rights if you do....

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree on your assessment of...The legal system is still there, you're still protected from being "gone after". They look at your emails and find something you'd rather not someone see. What can they do? Nothing without a warrent....
As I've understood it, the NSA has used it's nearly unchecked "authority" to use, effectively, a data trolling net, gathering up as much information as possible, then sifting through it for connections... THEN asking the courts for permission to pursue.
If this is the case, and it would seem to be part of the information we've been given, then that IS illegal and unscrupulous. If this is true, then where is the line of danger from outsiders overstepped by danger from our own government?

According to the law it's still perfectly legal. Also, the part of the datamining that has most people getting betwix themselves in a flutter isn't data in their hands, but on the servers of companies that either comply or are forced to complay via warrent to the government's requests. Really, this is like someone sitting there noting how many packages you're getting from Mr. X in Arabia or how many letters you're mailing to Mr. ImaTeeror, and if it's enough to cause concern, they'll look deeper into it.
Someone counting how many times you've called a person doesn't seem to be overstepping things any.

Assuming you're talking about Snowden, most of what he revealed was the US government performing illegal and/or unconstitutional spying against its own citizens. Informing people about what's being done to them in secret does far more than "damage the reputation of the US", it gives those people an opportunity to fight back. Or maybe you were thinking of the leaks that exposed the United States' hypocrisy in accusing China of cyber-spying when the US was caught doing the exact same thing? And even spying on countries that are supposedly its allies, like the European Union, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Greece, India, Turkey, and others? Yeah, the reputation of the US government suffers when this stuff gets out, and it damn well SHOULD. People and governments who do reprehensible things should be held accountable for their actions. If the government is so concerned about its reputation, maybe it should concentrate on not doing horrible things that pervert the ideals the country was founded upon, rather than clumsily trying to silence anyone who reveals its abuses.
The United States that I love represents the highest ideals of humanity- liberty, justice, compassion, honesty, equality, inalienable rights. Government of the people, by the people, for the people. You know, the kinds of things mentioned in the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights? I care about those ideals, and I get royally pissed off when the government tries to take away our rights, spy on its own citizens, and generally act like an Orwellian nightmare. I care about the country I live in, and you're damn right "I know what's better". I at least know that blind faith in authority is not the same thing as patriotism, and that a person who exposes the US government tearing down all the ideals it's supposed to uphold is a hero and not a traitor.

Spin doctors is right.
I find it funny that when Bush was in office, everyone was praising wiki-leaks as a godsend and proof that the Bush presidency was just as bad as all the 1984-comapring political vultures were saying it was
But fast forward a few years to when Obama is in office and another Wiki-leaks leak comes out, suddenly he is a horrible monster that needs to be brought to justice at all costs, due process be damned.

But a guy killing a Kid... even After he was told by the police not to engage the subject just to observe and report?? was this Justifiable Homicide or a Hate crime???
Not charging him would be a crime... but Corporate CEO's get away with Murdering thousands and no one says DICK.... or you have to prove the Products that they produce are Harmful BEFORE something is done (See frakking) or Monsanto GMO food... It could be making us Fat because even we cannot Digest it....

There's a simple formula for turning shit completely on its head.
1: Reinforce stupidity among the masses
2: Stick a vile blowhard in a monkey suit
3: Have said blowhard melodramatically condescend to opposition and inform the stupidified masses that believing the conspicuous truth is simultaneously idiotic and antisocial/antichristian
4: ????
5: Profiteer!

Reminds me of old Snobuni gag. On assignment, she breaks into a bad guy's home, and a police officer actually catches her in the act. immediately she declares to the officer that she's a burglar, and the bad guy is the home owner, which the bad guy readily agrees to (it's the truth, and he expects her to be carried away). The cop arrests him instead, because he's violating her rights.
It was a comment on the news at the time, when there were lots of real-life stories of homeowners defending themselves from strangers breaking-and-entering and getting arrested for their effort (and then sued by the criminals on top of it).
