Sketch of a young Merfolk soldier done in pen on toned paper and white pencil. I donno, just felt like doing some sea-themed armor.

Merpeople probably use gold or silver armour to fight the rust. At least Triton had a golden trident, hadn't he? We don't want to get too deep into details here, since wearing basically ANY kind of armour neglects the advantage you'd have to your natural habitat but BOTTOM LINE: It's cool, I like it :D
Hmmm good point and as armor would be less effective it would be more ceremonial. But now I'm torn...ceramic armor is sweet, but how would they fire the clay? Maybe using underwater geothermal vents, or lava flows? And gold and silver would be to soft for usable weapons, and again they would need acces to a forge. Of corse there is always trade with land dwellers, given their access to pearls and other precious materials from the sea, though any armor made by non aquatic folk wouldn't understand the dynamics of wearing armor suited to swimming ... Maybe it's made from the shaved and polished shell if giant clams or huge 40' sea snails...coral might work to and it can be carved and retains a high luster....
Red you know I love getting deep into the details with you, it part of what makes it such a joy to talk to :D

It wouldn't be very wise to outsource your arms production, wouldn't it? *gg* I guess realistically speaking, you are able to cold forge gold and silver, though I don't know wether this will work while being under water :D So, they'd pretty much be limited to everything they can easily work with. Teeth and bones of large animals, nacre, probably coral though is it flexible enough? Questions and more questions. But we all know that the true strength of Merpeople lies in their telepathic abilities which let's them command the beasts of the depth. But who'd seek to invade a Merpeople city anyway? It's under water - who could possibly have interest in doing that? And even if they have legitimate reason, they face the same problems regarding their weaponry. They'd probably just pollute or poison the water...
Goaty, likewise. Though I don't know if it's just that or your talent for sweet talking to me. I'm still smiling broadly at something you said to me lately ;)
