Big brothers are wonderful for keeping little squiggles safe

It was a a warm summer night. It was calm, nothing but the sounds of the crickets song filled the air and fireflies gently hovered aglow. The lights in the house were turned off except for the rooms that were dimly lit. They were nightlights, something that made a child feel safe from the darkness that surrounded them at night. In a room a squirrel was sitting on a bed, looking through a pop-up book.
She was dressed in her sleeper and her grub plush was sitting right beside her as if it was reading the story book with her. She was giggling to herself at the funny pictures the story told but as she was reading her tail wiggled about, pulling the cord to her nightlight. She gasped in surprised as she suddenly clung to Grub. She looked around in distress as she poked her nightlight with her free paw.
"I-It broke'd?" Gem whispered to herself as tears filled her eyes, a frightened whimper escaping her. "Grub... it broke'd..." She sniffled softly as she poke it again a few times, trying to see if she poked it enough that it would turn back on. "Why wont it fix...?" She said in a strained voice as if she was edging closer to crying out.
Footsteps were approaching her room. Gem couldln't see properly but she could hear the movements. "M-Monsters!" She cried ot as she grabbed her blanket and pulled it over her head, shivering underneath it.
"Monsters?!" A voice called out as the Raichu stepped into the room, his cheeks an tail was faintly glowing but for the most part he could be seen from his faint glow. "Where are they? I'll beat those monsters!" He called out before he realized the squirrel was hiding under her blanket.
"Gem...?" He approached the bed, climbing up onto the bed next to her. "What's wrong... why are you crying?" He asked with worry. Did she get hurt? Were there monsters in the room? He'd make them pay for hurting her!
"R-Ren... it broke'd... its dark and scary and lots of monsters..." Gem said from under her blanket sniffling.
"What broke'd sis?" Renris asked as he looked around before spotting the turned off nightlight. "Oh no... what happened to your light?" He asked before poking it a few times. "Hmmm... I has an idea! I can make it work again!"
Gem gently peeked out from her blanket. "R-Really...?"
"Uh-huh! Watch this!" The Raichu grabbed the nightlight and his cheeks sparked up gently. The light turned right back on without it being plugged in. "Tah-Dah!"
Gem stared in amazement before smiling slightly. She crawled out of her blanket so she could sit next to Renris. She held grub against her as she gazed at Renris and the nightlight. "Ooooh... I wish I could do sparklies like you..."
"I can always keep those bad dark monsters away!" The Raichu smiled toward Gem in a sheepish yet heroic way. "Don't worry, I'll keep that mean ol' dark away Gem. You can count on me!" His tail gently curled around her as he powered her nightlight.
Gem giggled as she reached one paw to grab Renris' tail, hugging it along with Grub as the bolt of the tail faintly glowed.
For the rest of that night Renris was going to ensure Gem that she was going to be safe at night. No darkness was going to scare her anymore.
