This is my system, you don't have to do it, but for me, it work.
1) Reference Images
2) Very loose and simple shaped for guide lines.
3) Add basic features (Eyes, muzzle, ears etc. )
4) Erase Guidelines
5) Refine outlines.
6) Add details (Iris, fur/hair etc)
7) Mico-Managing
8) Color (or shading for black and gray)
Usually watching people do livestreams or tutorials/speed-paints on YouTube is a very good way to improve.
