Tails for Sandy - Fundraiser to help my sister's rescue dog
We took Sandy into our family because no rescues were willing/able to take her on... it was painfully apparent to us that Sandy is a dog that would be doomed in a shelter what with her age, twisted right leg, badly ground-down and broken teeth, tumorous saggy belly, torn ear and scarred face. The shelter situation in California is so bad young dogs are being flown to Idaho to be given a better chance... Sandy would not have been given a chance.
Our mission to help Sandy has been taken to the highest level for she is now the fourth member of my sister's pack of Australian Cattle Dogs. It feels good to have a pack again (RIP: Winry, Evie, Bindi and Zury, killed in a hit and run crime July 2012)
Sandy was found discarded in the deserts of Southern California and through the kindness of a rescue in Bodega made her way home to us in Sacramento. For more on Sandy's story, please go here if you are logged into Facebook https://www.facebook.com/gemily.wes.....636&type=3 if not you can get her basic info here http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11095260/
So far she has had her first thorough vet visit, blood tests, joint supplements, and medication to clear up a bad infection which was causing her a fever and also making properly assessing her tumors impossible.
The next step is a spay operation at which time her mammary tumors will be removed. There is also the cost of Xrays to asses her leg and an operation to fix it if it is feasible, and lastly we should consider her dental needs...
Yes she needs a lot, but that is why we stepped in to help Sandy in the first place, she is a sweetheart who has lived through hell and deserves a happy ending to her life but no rescue was able to dedicate the time and money to her medical care... my sister also could not help but empathize with her considering my sister had her right leg badly damaged by the same car that killed her previous four dogs...

did you take Sandy to the UC Davis Veterinary medicine? They can help any pet at a decent and affordable price. They helped my husky dog with his eye surgery and it coasted $500 and now he is a happy husky ^^ They did a wonderful job and I know they can help Sandy for a good price.
I wish I can help but I understand how it is trying to get the medical needs for a elderly pet..... Just before last christmas I adopted an elderly ferret that was abandoned at an apartment that had manageable problems but expensive but I saved him from a diet of cat food, poor health and loneliness.... My other ferret snapped him out of his depression and in spite of his age now has a spring back in his step.... As long as Sandy knows she is loved and being cared for that is one of the biggest things you can do for her.....
We can afford normal vet care for our animals but extensive care and surgery for an adopted case is a different story, if she was not made part of our family I would still be doing this fundraiser to help her and sending the money along to whatever rescue had her. The only real difference between raising money for Sandy as our pet and raising money to give to her sitting in a shelter is she is here being loved and has people dedicated to her care, a forever home, a secure future.
But the thing is no rescues were available to cover the time and dedication this dog needs, let alone the vet cost. This dog was going to be put down if no one took her, the rescue following her case was pleading for help, there were no rescues or associations willing/able to take her, anywhere, this dog was found in the deserts of Southern California and thanks to the kindness of a rescue in Bodega was brought to Rippon as part of a mass transport where my sister could pick her up and take her home to Sacramento (along with another dog my sister brought home for someone an hour north of us to pick up for adoption) this dog traveled hundreds of miles past countless rescues who were unable to help her. It was us or nothing.
The shelter situation in California is so bad they are flying dogs to Idaho to give them a better chance at getting homes... an old dog with tumors and a twisted leg would be given no chance.
