I used rare earth magnets. They're reeeeally strong and should still work even through crochet.
There are lots of diferent sized ones too.
If you use more than one in a stack, the magnetic pull is stronger.
I used stacks of three in my 'Oops. My head fell off' Lambikins, and that held really well through fur fabric.
