Oh absolutely! But to me having the same body as a character and having a poor cosplay is as bad as having a different body type and a poor cosplay. After all, the whole point of cosplay is, well, costuming :P Not much fun in it if the costumes are just bought, but I have huge respect for anyone who puts the time into making their own cosplay and then the confidence to wear it!
Back in the early days of comics artists had to be fast to meet pressing deadlines. Drawing a bodyshape and adding details to make it into a unitard was faster than complex outfits and clothing.
Over time the skin tight spandex "look" from those early comics set the standard for all superhero costumes that followed.
