Okay, I feel I have to explain why I found this so interesting.
A lichen is a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an algae. The algae feeds the fungus through photosynthesis, and the fungus keeps the algae moist. It's a perfect relationship, which is why lichen are some of the first colonizers of barren landscapes.
Now you can see all the lichen around, but in the middle is a moss with fungus fruiting out of it. It's basically a lichen, but instead of the fluid symbiotic relationship of true lichen, it's a ghetto, half-assed version.
HOWEVER, this may be exactly what the first lichens ever looked like. Two clearly independent life forms working together to stay alive.
Fucking beautiful.
PS I know it's a shady photo, IT'S ABOUT THE CONTENT, DAMNIT.
