FINALLY DONE! XD Only took me months! :P But hey, it was only my first try, so hopefully I'll get a bit faster as I go. :) Anyway, sorry for the severe camera angle here; will post a few better pics of him posing outside, once I chose the best ones of the bunch. The whiskers were a contribution from Aske (naturally-shedded ones, of course, and they were HELL to put in), and the other details were added by hand-stitching (in pink, black and brown), plus a little marker coloring for the pawpads (though the pink inside the ears is actually pink wool), and black cabochon bead eyes. :)

Thank you! :) I had the same problem of him being "too fuzzy"; I just couldn't get all those stray bits felted down, and then I realized I can just carefully trim them off, so I laid very sharp scissors on their side, and did it that way, and it worked great! But I've also got much better (Merino) wool to use for my next one, which is very fine and silky-soft, so I think that will be easier to felt and not have tons of stray fluff sticking out everywhere. :)
You'll basically need some felting needles in various sizes, a wooden holder for them, a foam pad of some sort to work on, some wool batt and wool roving in the colors of your choice (use the rougher batt for the under layers, and the finer roving for the outside layers and detailing), aluminium wire for a skeleton if you plan to use one, and thread and eyes if you plan to use them. Here are some links:

I'll send more links and info when I get back from our vacation in a week, but meanwhile, check my scraps to see how I made this...and good luck with everything! :D

Yeah, I was pretty amazed to see them since they're typically rather private little critters. I think it was a little family I had spotted and they were darting around the rocks of the breakwater and onto the walkway atop it. It was a breakwater at one of the marinas along the shore of Lake Ontario... which is apparently in their natural range. Bronte Harbour, to be specific. It was a decade ago though, so I'd have no clue if they're still around the area.
Thanks, and yep, I plan to do more mustelids, but may do a skunk first, because I'm starting with white and black/white animals (to keep it simple) until I get better at this. XD Am planning going to do several arctic animals to begin with, and maybe a white or black horse. :)
Wow, he looks like he got felted down really firmly too! Way to go crazy with those needles lol I was dinking around with art supplies the other night, and started felting a little grey rat, and I actually wondered how this guy was going for you! It's good to see he is completed now :)
Maybe eventually, hah. I have a pretty big stockpile of artwork that hasn't seen the light of the internet yet because I'm too lazy/otherwise busy to update my galleries, and the little grey rattie will probably have the same fate. I'll try to remember to show him off here when he's done though, just because you asked :)
Thank you so much!! <3 If he didn't have a wire skeleton, I could have maybe felted him separate little toes, but it was the best I could do to just stitch "toes" instead, and the ears are a bit thicker than I would like, but something to remember for next time! :)
Needle felting is full of those "oh well I'll try again next time" moments XD I'm glad you enjoyed yourself and that you plan to continue working with wool, I definitely enjoy Herman so I can't wait to see what else you come up with!
Oh, and ears are always tough (at least for me). Patience and practice will be your best friends when it comes to ears ;)

Haven't decided yet...hubby says I shouldn't sell him for less than $200, because of all the time (months) and effort I put into him, not to mention all the broken needles! XD I am thinking of listing him on my Etsy page, but if you really want him, perhaps we can work something out? :)
