This level can't be all bad ...
Sociability is HARD. So I sit in a dark room and beat up ASCII text.
Sometimes the ASCII text beats me up instead.

I play alot of FPS games. Yet Dwarf Fortress gotta be the most gruesome, mean and violent game I ever played.
Sure it's a happy face blinking X... but for me it's one of my legendary dwarfs who have collapsed into coma due to damage in the nerve system. And his legs and arms is spread over the battlefield as small red "²"... it's so heartbreaking!
It looks like a jumbled mess of symbols and text characters for anyone who hadn't played the game for a few hours, which makes the game even more amusing to play amongst other people...

I think that's part of the joy of those games... building up a character and then mourning his death. A collegue at work gets really depressed after losing a character with months of work in it. xD
By the way... if you want a REAL hard core game, try Dwarf Fortress.. it's hard to get into it but well worth it. There should be one or two 3D-clients for that one to make it more appealing, too. ;)

I kind of wish there was a compromise ... like, respawn with half your gold, or a percentage loss of your experience, or something. Permanently losing a character after so much work is devastating, but using wizard mode and respawning with no penalty at all takes all the suspense out of the game.
I have played Dwarf Fortress, actually! Heh, I kind of have a love/hate relationship with base-building games. I love them in concept, but after playing them awhile ... eh. I was literally quivering with excitement when I was reading DF's feature list, but after awhile, getting bogged down in administrative things turned me off of it.
Still, though ... Purplecat plays it a lot, and he's always gushing about some new awesome thing they added, and I'm like "OH SHIT THAT'S SO COOL."

Yeah, but I just made that scene up ... OH! Shit, I should've some of my old ZAngband screenshots as reference! I've got one of this vault that looks like Main Street in Disneyland, only slightly less crowded and somewhat more dangerous.
God, ZAngband kicked my ass so hard. I think I only ever made it to level 40 or so in the dungeon, and that was when I was CHEATING.

I think some of its difficulty came from bugginess also. I mean
a) I felt obliged to keep backups in case of inexplicable crash when I stepped somewhere.
b) Death drakes should not appear in the wilderness near a path next to my Level 17 character! I mean WTF -- on the level of stupid causes of death, that is like a randomly triggered 'Rocks fall. Everyone dies.' (up to two turns to teleport out of it's LOS, then sure death). Not even a sadist would make the game deliberately that difficult.
I hope.
Have you played ToME (Tales of Middle Earth)? It's pretty hard too, but more rewarding and explorable than other *bands. If you enjoy insane difficulty, after 'winning' the game by defeating M******, you can traipse through the Void which is equivalent to DL666 ... 696 (with insanely leveled monsters to match), and try to beat up M***** B****** to obtain total winner status. YAY!
( I never got that far, not being paranoid enough and hence succumbing to YASD after YASD)

Yeah, I really hated the wilderness in ZAngband. You'd never know what level the area you're in is until you stumble upon one of its inhabitants. And oh man, the dungeon entrances, guarded by hundreds of monsters ... if I was IN a dungeon, with walls and stuff to protect me, then sure, no problem, but on the SURFACE? Yeah, no.
I HAVE played TOME, actually. I liked it, except for the fact that I'd have to level up back in Barrow-Downs every time I died. Funny how that works, eh? You can go through thousands of levels of a plain, undecorated dungeon without ever getting bored, but give it a little personality and suddenly it starts to overstay its welcome.

I couldn't get into NetHack. Something about a game with permanent death royally pisses me off because if I'm going to put that much work into a character, I don't want some random pit or bad fountain killing them off out of nowhere, invalidating my entire reason for playing.
It also makes the savegame feature pretty much useless, except of course for just quitting and reloading.

Yeah, I can understand that ... On the other hand, it DOES add a remarkable level of suspense and intensity to the game. You could of course turn on wizard mode and avoid death altogether, but without consequences the game becomes surprisingly boring. I kind of wish there was a compromise ... like, being able to respawn, but losing half of your gold ... that'd change the dynamic of the game, though. The high score screen would be pointless, except maybe for people who can actually beat the game. That's the thing. Roguelikes are SO DIFFICULT, that even cheating can't guarantee your victory. I played a single character on ZAngband for over a year, probably had to respawn hundreds of times, and I never even made it HALFWAY THROUGH THE DUNGEON. Granted, ZAngband is notoriously difficult, even among Angband variants, but STILL.
have you played Ancient Domains of Mystery? (ADOM) www.adom.de
its really fun, and you dont die as easilly as in alot of other roguelike games, but you can play for a whole month and still not have beaten it yet.

Y'know, I DID download it once, but I couldn't get into it for some reason. I think I was so used to Angband variants that my brain couldn't shift gears to learn something completely different.
Maybe I'll try it again ... I've been in the mood for a real RPG, not just a dungeon crawler, and I've heard ADOM is pretty deep.
