Interesting creatures. Sound a bit like the Nightmares from my ponyverse. Nightmare feed of ponies' fears and insecurities. It also sounds a lot like what happened to Astralus. Although his appearance did not change, centuries of loneliness drove him mad and he attacked Equestria. I have seen someone else with a similar such idea called a Dark Pony.
