Chapter 6: Night mission
When night fell, Flint was confused. He was unadapted to the earth's days, as a result he wandered the ship, on his crutches, looking out every window.
Jakar was in the mess hall eating alone. Kuusco was elsewhere on the ship, but Flint was uncertain. He roamed to the mess hall and shuffled to the table.
“These days are weird! It's six and the sun is down?”
Jakar opened with his mouthful of chicken, “The Captain says there are only twenty-five hours.”
Flint shook his head in amazement. Jakar looked at his crutches and replied, “They took it again?”
Flint scoffed, “Yeah! Those little bastards are having fun with this. I gave up hunting after the sun went down.”
Jakar's limbs wiped his mouth of the grease, “So you guys are going on a night mission?”
Flint shrugged.
Kuusco walked in and shouted to gather their attention, “All right! It's 11 lets go.”
Flint shrugged to emphasize the crutches. Kuusco snapped her fingers and in came a SCRiD with his leg.
“No excuses! We are going!” Kuusco then walked off toward the ramp.
Jakar leaned in to Flint, “I think she likes taking it from you as much as they do.”
Flint dwells on that thought, as they stepped outside. Kuusco carried an empty sack while Flint had a case of tools. The streets were empty except an occasion light of a flying police cruiser. Kuusco lowered herself and her voice, “Keep low and quiet! Curfew is the harshest hours of this city.”
They traveled the dark keeping close to the walls. Avoiding the light and police patrols they carefully and stealthily made it to the bank. Flint handed Kuusco the case, and she opened it to reveal four pairs of metal, clawed gloves. She put a pair on her hands and feet, and Flint followed her example and they grabbed the gear. With the clawed gloves, they scaled the walls easily as though they were crawling on the ground. Flint was amazed with their ability, as they made it to the roof.
On the roof a skylight window presented itself. Kuusco peeked in, “Ok pup! This window has a red scanner to detect it opening. Inside, five cameras. Four in the corners and one in the center main wall. Ten hidden cameras, you won't see, except for a hole of very small size. I am going to lower you in by the rope after we cut the glass. When you land, to your right is the teller counter. Next to that is the security office. To unlock it the code is 2334.”
“How do you know that?” Flint snapped with a question.
“Observation boy!” Kuusco replied, “Pay attention!”
She returned, “Be quiet now! There is a thrope dorm to your left. They live here as guards. They won't care if you are one they will alert the police.”
Flint nodded. He was as ready as ever.
The glass was short work with the laser cutter. The scan didn't pick up the light, and shortly after Kuusco set a magnet to disrupt it. Flints leg was effected as it lowered in power and was hard to move. Flint was about to complain, but Kuusco shoved him through the window. She quickly gripped the rope saving him from a bone shattering fall.
He unhooked himself and remained low as he crept toward the security room. Leaping over the counter he managed to make little noise, but stumbled and fell to the ground. He stood swiftly and lightly walked to the door, his stomach lifting with nervousness and his mind dancing with images of being caught. He pressed the numbers 2234. It buzzed an incorrect.
Flint gritted his teeth and tried again 2234. Another buzz. He attempted to try it again, when a female voice softly called out, “What are you doing?”
Flint's face drained with fear. He stiffened. “Please let me be a schizophrenic Please let me be a schizophrenic.”
He slowly turned to see the female thrope standing with a concerned expression. He recognized her as the same canine from earlier. He shivered as his mind ran through all the answers he could possible give. The only thing to come out was gasps.
“You're robbing us aren't you?” she replied.
Still gasping he nodded and slowly walked from the door. She took a step forward, and he took a step further.
“It's 2334.” she solemnly said.
Flint groaned and fainted.
When he came to She was knelt over him, and Kuusco was inside the vault clearing it out. Flint shuffled up, “Wai....whu....what?”
Kuusco peeked her head from the vault, “Oh! You're awake! Seems your poster girl is a keeper.”
Flint looked at the female, “You...you didn't... you help us?”
She shrugged, “I hate this job.”
Her smiled warmed Flint, and he chuckled.
Kuusco walked up to him with the bag full of credit chips, “Hey horn dog! I must say I thought it was just in stupid little stories where the guy acts like a doofus in front of a pretty girl.”
Flint snapped back, “HEY!”
Kuusco smiled, “Come on! We're done!”
Kuusco looked back at Flint, “Oh! And her name is Sierra.”
Flint giggled stupidly, as he tried to hide his nervous expression.
“And this horny doofus you can call 'Flint.'” Kuusco glanced back.
Sierra reached out her hand to Flint, “Pleased to meet you.”
He ecstatically clutched it , “ Me too!”
Kuusco yelled back as she was heading out the door with the bag, “Come on! We gotta go!”
The way back to the Ant was harder then before. Police units were constantly patrolling every street. Now Kuusco had the additional task of sneaking two young ones across the line. Each patrol unit consisted two personnel. A human and a thrope officer. For every fifth patrol unit a flying cruiser flew by with a spotlight.
“Do they know?” Flint asked Kuusco. She shook her head, “It's always like this.”
They managed to get by and had several close calls. The Ant laid waiting for them and Jakar was at the landing ramp, “You guys ok?”
Kuusco nodded, “Yeah! We got it! Hurry!”
Jakar stared at Sierra, and his jaw dropped. Kuusco smacked him upside his head, “Don't be a doof!”
The ramp closed and the Ant shut down for the night. Sierra was shown to her bunk by Flint, and Jakar followed closely.
“Here is your bunk. Right next to the armory. Kuusco doesn't want us close to you for some reason.” Flint shrugged
Jakar nodded in agreement, “Yeah I don't know why either.”
Sierra nodded, “Thank you!”
Flint had his dumbfounded smile as Sierra closed her door. Quickly and happily Jakar and Flint cheered, “SCORE!!!!”
“You totally have her!” Jakar scoffed.”
Flint shrugged and fluffed his coat, “I have that way with ladies.”
He turned and almost fell over as he ran into Kuusco.
“Such a way you have.” She replied.
Flint and Jakar straightened and saluted, “Sorry captain!”
Kuusco rolled her eyes, “Go to bed guys.”
“Yes Ma'am!”
Jakar went off in a hurry, and Flint followed Kuusco, “I have one question though.”
“Ask away, horn dog”
“Why did she want to come with us?”
“If they found the bank was robbed and she was there, they'd kill her.”
Flint stopped in amazement, “What?”
Kuusco nodded, “They don't trust us there. Remember?”
Flint lowered his head, as the Captain ordered, “Get some sleep. We leave tomorrow.”
The hours were off for him. He rolled, tossed, and turned. He tried to sleep, but something wouldn't allow him to. In his desperation to find comfort he rolled out of bed. For a minute he lay there wondering why he couldn't sleep. Maybe it was the new girl. Maybe it was fear that the SCRiD were going to take his leg again.
He crawled back on the bed, and put his face in his hands as he ponder what was wrong. The door opened and Flint jerked around in a startled state. Sierra stood in the doorway.
Flint grasped his blanket and covered himself, “What....what are you doing here?”
“I can't sleep.” Replied Sierra, “I thought I could see you.”
“What?! See me NAKED?!!!” He snapped as he tensed.
She chuckled, “No! You just seem to be someone I can relate to.”
Flint rubbed his face and shifted his weight so he could face her. She walked in and sat on the bed.
Flint tried to speak, but nothing came out. He scratched his neck as he thought, “So....um....yeah.....uh....why can't you sleep?”
Sierra sighed, “I just can't stop thinking about leaving. Everything I know is going away.”
Flint suddenly relaxed, “I know that feeling.”
“I didn't want to stay, but I was still attached.”
Flint slowly shuffled toward her, “It sometimes feels as if you loose a piece of you.”
Sierra nodded. Then stood up, “Wanna look around with me?”
“Yeah!....Just.....let me get dressed.”
“OH! Yeah! Sorry.” She replied, then she walked out the door.
They wandered the ship looking at every room they could and bothered every SCRiD they could find. They finally went to the cockpit and sat on the couch, where they stared at each other for a bit. They continued to talk until they both fell asleep on the couch.
