I have a friend who actually has two Civil War hardtack biscuits with provenance. They look like they could still be eaten, though I wouldn't want to.

There was a letter with the hardtack biscuits my friend had. It was from the guy who had been issued the biscuit, and it described how they ate them. He said they would soak them in water overnight, then pick the dead floating grubs out that had drowned. The biscuits were removed from the water for a time. They would then cook the bacon they were issued for breakfast and put the biscuits into the bacon grease and cook them until they had soaked up all the grease. They had this with their coffee. They were issued one hardtack biscuit, one pound of bacon, and a pound of coffee each day.

i wish we had done that. i didn't really eat mine i broke off a piece to try it and give the rest to my cousin, i didn't care for the taste but with bacon anything can taste good,
after we was done with that we went and got hotdogs hahaha
