I've had the pleasure of knowing
yelth and
smokepaw for going on 10 years independently. Both have been my friends through a lot of good times and bad. I watched them meet, I watched them fall in love, and to say that seeing their story unfold right before my eyes has been a treat is a drastic understatement.
This piece is to celebrate their anniversary by commemorating their marriage ceremony. All of their adornments are personal items they actually own (with some extra details added by myself based on their tastes). The chalice is the one they used at their handfasting ceremony, and the combined yellow and white rose petals signify marriage and friendship, because you can't have one without the other.
Happy anniversary, Smelth. I wish you many more to come :)
Watercolor and colored pencil.
*EDIT* If you would like to see WIP shots of this piece in progress, please check out this post on my Tumblr!
smokepaw was getting spammed with this daily as I couldn't tweet about it. AGONY!

Oh gosh. Days. Spread out over months though. I'm really bad about tracking my time accurately but if I had to guess I'd have to say a week, maybe a week and a half of solid 9-5 work days. It was definitely on the "long term project" list. This is the longest I've ever had to keep a gift a secret. It was torture. D:
Thank you! The background was a series of happy accidents (as always lol!) but I tested out some combos on scrap paper first instead of winging it like I usually do. I found a layering I loved and duplicated for this. It doesn't show up in the scan but the brown flecks are actually copper paint.
Awww, this is really nice. I like how your art style is close to that of how
kyoht 's used to be. (and I mean that as a compliment...a huge one)
Look here: http://us-p.vclart.net/vcl/Artists/.....rHealsLoki.jpg
Her style changed over the years and yours has become quite beautiful. I love the texture of the fur and the things they are wearing. The anatomy is spot on and the expressions are well done.
Bravo!

Kyoht has been an inspiration to me for a good long while, it's true, but I think I've developed my own style independently of her influence. I put a lot more fur detailing into my work, for one, while she is a master of indicating texture through simplicity (a technique I've yet to figure out). I take the literal approach to texture while she is much better at creating illusions of texture with minimal but more deliberate application of medium. I think the only way we can be compared at this point is choice of medium (watercolor and colored pencil) and subject matter (tribal canines) but the rest is night and day.
But thank you for putting me on the same level as one of my idols! It does mean a lot :)

You're quite welcome I DO think you are that good. I am far from being a good art critic , but I know quality when I see it. That's why I have prints from Carl Brenders and Scott Kennedy on my walls at home. I don't know their techniques, but I know the result: beautiful art.
I put you on par with Amber Hill and Dark Natasha as well. Different styles obviously, but similar quality and attention to detail.

This is... simply... so beautiful. I just look at this and get mesmerized with all the details, and all the feeling that this pics passes, all that little strokes making all that fur texture... and the objects... and that shiny on the beads, it's all just so magic!
It's so amazing carefully done and it really shows how you got into the drawing! I love how you draw anthros as well, they are beautiful. Oh and the pose is so natural!
I have been missing that feeling, that magic on art nowdays, it become more and more difficult to find a piece that strikes me and makes me truly feel it, that makes me get into the pic as well and see that magic! And you have that!
You have an awesome power to share that feelings and magic throught your art, and that is so special!!!
I have been wanting to say that for some time, since I have found you at Deviantart, and since you started to inspire me, Thank you for sharing you work with us.
Keep making great art! And keep inspiring people!

Oh my gosh, this comment is so incredibly touching! Thank you so much for your kind words, they mean a lot :3 I absolutely enjoy creating pieces that are not only pleasing to the eye but make people feel something. I put a lot of time and effort and actual emotion into this piece, in part because I loved what I was doing and also because I know the recipients very well.
I'm so happy to have inspired you (I checked out your gallery, you are amazing! Definitely getting a watch from me) and its words of encouragement like yours that keep me going. Thank you!

Oh! Sorry I didn't know you were referencing the WIPs, I thought you somehow saw tape on the final and I was confused. Its been a long time since this piece was finished so I've forgotten what the WIPs looked like. SO. The tape is on the bodies (as well as masking fluid) so that I can paint the background without getting paint on the wolf figures. I glaze thin layers of color over the background first and add salt, which draws moisture from the paper and creates that speckled texture you see. Once the BG is dry, I can remove the tape and the masking fluid and the wolf silhouettes are completely untainted, as you can see from another shot. I then paint the wolves separately. It's just easier to paint the background broadly than to individually shape around each fur clump and detail without the masking.
Hope that answers your questions.
