Exactly! There are so many ways the story of those three can be viewed and I would much rather go with the idea Peach loves Bowser as he does her but cannot be seen with him while Mario is chosen by her parents to marry her and continue the reign over the kingdom and she has no love for him versus mario saving her all the time from the big bad monster....
I feel genuinely bad for Bowser. Early character introductions say that he attacked the Toads and Princess Peach because they were happy and his kingdom was going downhill because it was ruled by fear. Bowser got attached to Peach but he's now stuck in this endless loop of "I'm a bad guy" colliding with "I just want this person to think I'm great/love me".
