I don't think there's a historical reference to such an event but in this world I'd envision using/storing/manipulating biological weapons, no matter how good the outcome is, might end up stripping such a renowned geneticist of all his support and credibility.

In this storyline, the Bush family regained power and secretly relied on Dr. Washington's prowess to save a family member and her unborn baby. Before it was over, Dr. Washington held the pregnant mother, her twin and the unborn baby hostage for a total of 10 minutes before the President agreed to hide WMDs in the Doc's care. They had a hidden agreement that he would no longer pursue the Doc if he would store the weapons for him. No trustworthy leader would give up their ace card so easily but it was costing millions to move the weapons constantly so UN inspectors wouldn't find them. Doc suddenly declared his land a consulate of a foreign country and the UN couldn't touch him. President almost has a heart attack. Doc has more power than money but at the same time he still can't do the illegal research that might help him achieve immortality.
