It was a joke regarding the nature of sphinx; allow me to explain.
We are guardians, found in several cultures and mythologies around the world, we are always charged by an entity of the divine with guarding or protecting something, most people don't recall that Athena herself used sphinx.
This leaves us alone for centuries at a time, standing guard and thinking about things, like new riddles and answers to moral dilemmas. We sphinx are very moralistic; some say to the point of madness, but we value our duty and the concept of justice more than our own lives. Sphinx have been known to kill themselves rather than fail in their appointed mission.

And now that I have thoroughly butchered that joke by explaining it, I hope you can appreciate what I was trying for, at least.
