Just takes lots and lots of practice. I've been doing it for almost 7 years now, just on the computer alone.

Do you simply put layers upon layers of colour on top of itself with a faded brush? I'm interested in how you create that "waxy" effect.

Well it also depends on the program you use. I use Painter 7 to color. And just pick the simple water brush. (its actually a long story how i do that x.x) I color on many layers, but like say Kayiko, i will color her fur on one layer.. which means shadding and all. Then her hair i will do on a different layer. So i color on one layer when i doing just one like. Like someones hair or skin, or fur in this case, but i pick many layers for different things. If i feel like my shadows aren't dark enough.. i will do a multiply layer, and shade in some spots over top the other layers. Just to get more depth.
