You know'em, you've seen'em.
Big bulky dudes or little wise-crackers getting into a brawl. But it's not just that, they're the LEADER of a ragtag bunch of probably-troubled-maybe-angsty-and-in-need-of-a-life-changing-moment party members.
And WHAT is it that they're swinging over their head, and down on the enemy's, probably 90% of the time?
That's right...the SWORD.
Most of the time in an adventure epic of old, sometimes new, your hero's gonna have the iconic weapon in hand to dish out a can of whoop-arse. What IS it that makes a sword so awesome?
Is it because it's that "legendary thing that nobody can wield but the "chosen one" " ?
Is it something sorta-common but becomes legendary when that hero guy picks it up and starts using it?
Is it something only a bunch of guys in robes use to either maintain order in the universe...or to just fling it around startin' wars and stuff?
Doesn't really matter, because it all comes down to THAT WEAPON.
The sword is an iconic piece in both video games and the stories of heroes (or similar titles) as the tool of protection or destruction. There have been hundreds, probably thousands of these sharp pointy things of doom out there that spawn countless stories and makes a man (or dragon, heh heh) the stuff of legends.
Over time, the sword goes into many different flavors.
You got the classic "handle here, stick'em with the pointy bit" ones...
Then clashing ones like the gunblade that is sorta...a cool combination but a little bit of the "guns vs swords" debate...
Then you got ones so epic they got powers of their own or even have some sort of good (or evil) spirity thing in it.
Or you could be like the man Cloud and just wield one that is JUST FREAKIN' HUGE. Compensating? Tell that to Sephiroth (who, ironically, has a freakin' LONG long long long sword).
I'm just taking a moment to say...respect the sword. This weapon of choice has been iconic of the heroic stature since their creation. It comes in many different forms and flavors, but it all boils down to it being, for the most part, the trusted and worthy tool for any adventurer.
In these days...for the most part...you got guns, and bazookas, and lasers, and orbital cannons...like said, there's a debate when it comes to swords and guns...but let us not forget that the sword has it's place in the future too. It will always be the iconic sight that'll make it obvious that, "Hey! That guy's a hero!"
...ok, granted. I use a shock pistol. ALMA, PLEASE give me access to a energy sword!

"Lets see if Laz can list all the swords in one go. From top to bottom- Halo energy sword, Gunblade from FF8, Frostmourn, The sword of Omens, He-Man's sword, Cloud's Buster Sword, a lightsaber, Sting, and The Master Sword. Laz thinks that's all of them. A smith has to have an eye for legendary weapons."
"Laz knows the story of three of those swords very well. Sting is Bilbo Baggins sword from The Hobbit. It glows blue when orcs and other evil things get near it. The sword of Omens gets it's powers from the gem in it's hilt and is the center piece of the entire Thundarian race. If it is destroyed they all will perish. Frostmourn is the cursed blade of The Lich King Arthus. It grants it's user the incredible power of the Lich King but steals the soul of those who wield it and those it kills. Of all those swords Laz thinks that one is the most dangerous."
Nice nice. Think Sting is an elvish sword...and a copy belongs with some weird reporter guy with glasses....
Oh yeah Frostmourn...think that was shown in uhh...Warcraft 3? And yeah Arthus...you were a good guy at first...till you...you know...decided to massacre an entire city which came out to be a race between you and Malganis (or whatever his name was). Then he...goes all undead and everything and tries to summon some great evil.
....as said, not ALL swords are heh heh...good...

I have to say that while I am a firearms type myself, swords did always have something special about them. I mean Borderlands 2 for instance, the weapons were all cool and powerfull, but nothing felt quite as good as sprinting at someone as Zer0 and getting a crit with his energy sword.
Also about the replica thing, why couldn't ya use the construction things that ake your diap- um, I mean MAGs to make some? Put in metal, calibrate, put in 3D image of the blade (there are probobly houndreds on the net) and there we go. Altho depending on the machine you may have some problems with Cloud's big ass sword.

Yeah there's a thing between ranged/melee people. Think that woman from FMA said something about it...but yeah, the sword's the way to go if you want to get in there and feel satisfied! Though I have to admit, headshots do that too...
What was that? 0_-
Ooooh weapons are ummm...
DUPLICATION OF WEAPONRY IS A DEBATED CONCEPT. WHILE IT'S APPLICATION FOR MILITARY PURPOSES AND FIREARM DISTRIBUTORS IS GREAT, IF SUCH A CONVENIENCE IS MADE IN PUBLIC-REGARD...
Yeah...not pretty, everybody would be armed to the teeth And believe me, many of them have more teeth than humans do.
IN RETROSPECT, AZUL'S DIAPERS ARE HARDLY A FIREARM.
...IN MOST CIRCUMSTANCES.
...you love putting ideas in people's heads don't ya.

It's actualy suprising that even today some people, even mercs and soliders, still carry some sort of bladed weapon. Most notable would defenetly be Jack Churchill, the guy went into battle with a Longbow, grenades, bagpipes and his Scotish longsword. Trick is he was a comando and even with this setup he still managed many battles and survive the entire war as well as a battle and evacuation after the war. Just read up on wikipedia and the net about him, he was a bonefied badass.
Altho I see your point about weapon fabrication, that being made public would be a veeeeery bad idea. Still, maybe you could get some of those swords from earth? Quite a few real steal replicas exist.
