Aside from selling illustrations to Ruralite magazine, I also sold a couple of my own written articles, generating two paychecks in place of one. My first published article (and first professional written sale) was "The Ghost on my Bed". It was an account of how I came by my first cat, Scratch, his life, and his death. I illustrated it with an accurate, if simplified, drawing of how Scratch followed me home one very cold, clear night after I had been tobogganing. His tail had been frozen (and you can see in the drawing that it's short). He also had a dislocated hip, yet walked along behind me for more than half a mile. The hill has been more or less overrun by development since the mid-1960's, but the rail road bridge is still there, and so is the mound with the storm drain, and the line of power lines.
Years later, after Scratch's death, I would sometimes seem to feel him sleeping on the end of my bed.
And this brings to an end the final batch of Ruralite drawings I intend to post. (Though perversely, the last batch is also the first batch the casual viewer encounters in my gallery.)

The mind is a wonderful thing. I also sometimes heard my mother calling me when I wanted to be up at a certain time, though she wasn't. My personal experience with odd things like that led me to dismiss other people's claims about ghosts or the spirit world. If I can't believe myself, why should I believe them?
I remember that story, it's one of my favourites. What made it so good was your portrayal of Scratch as just an ordinary cat. Mom and Dad used to subscribe to Reader's Digest, (I don't), so I've read enough stories about animal heroes and special pets. Scratch was probably like any other cat; special only because he was yours. And that's what you brought out in his story. That's what I admire about your writing.
Oh yes, the illustration; also one of your better pieces, IMHO.

Cats are like that. One of sisters was just married and setting up home with her husband when a little cat arrived and was rather insistant that their house (apartment actually) was incomplete without a kitty. Turned out, as small as she was, she was a regular Trojan Horse full of kittens. Homes were found and steps taken to prevent a sequel. Ah, well.
The picture with the cat in it was for Ruralite, but I didn't think it exotic enough for a fanzine audience. I made a photocopy, blanking out the area around the cat, and drew in a girl who followed me home instead. Alas, no girl has ever followed me home... Prefer guys with cars instead of tobaggans I guess.
