I personally like the background. It looks simple/abstract, but conveys the scenery quite well. (I think anyway... It's a fair bit of plantlife making it up... yes?)
In regards to the whole picture, I think it looks rather good. The rain is well done, and the whole picture does a very good job conveying the somber mood.
