I haven't given up on the new Blender particle system yet. After reading online about how others are using it and how the Peach developers have (apparently) indicated they're using it, I got a little patience and started playing with it.
Now, in this there's good and bad. The fur along her left cheek is really nice. It curves the way I want it to, it has a nice texture, and you get that nice, soft line around the face. The fur along the nosepads isn't bad either, until you get right to her nose and down to her lips, as well as around her lips. There's also problems with the fur going up between her eyes, but mostly I've been trying to tweak the nosepad fur, so I haven't addressed that specifically yet.
There are several tweaks I want to try. One of them changes the way Blender renders the strands, something along the lines of making it less like strands and more like sweeping brush strokes, and I think that's where I need to go. I also need to address the underlying material... possibly give it some kind of bump map, break up the surface so the hair looks more like it belongs. I think I also need to make the underlying material a lot darker. I think the fur should be what her actual color is, and the underside just a darker shade of that color.
My biggest problem right now isn't Blender though, it's my work environment. I've tried several ways to change my desk around so I can use the computer and not make this CTS any worse. So far it's just not working out. Voice command software isn't doing the trick... Blender just has too many complicated key combinations that the software simply can't simulate correctly. The tablet is perfect when I want to groom and modify the hair/texture, but it sucks for the basic "mousing" stuff. I have a trackball now, and even though it's lacking a middle mouse button, it's far easier on my hand than the mouse ever was. The problem is this frigging desk. The keyboard platform is too damn small, and my keyboard is too damn wide. I need to completely gut this desk and start with a new one with a better design, but... I really don't have the money for it. I might real soon now, but for now it'd be nice to figure something out with what I have.

I don't remember specifically, but somewhere between five and ten minutes, maybe more. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but it seems like an awful long time. Since posting this I've played around with some of the settings and cut that time way down (I had it set up to five segments for each particle, which I think for fur is way too many), and the results are promising, but I haven't yet been able to groom the particles. This stupid desk of mine is just not cooperating.
I did notice that using the ztransparency with the threads improves the look, but also raises the render time greatly. I think by turning it off I can bring the rendertime down to groom and make the hair look right, then turn the transparency on when I'm closer to the "final" image. Waiting ten minutes between each adjustment is... kinda annoying.

Well I aim for quick renders so I can't say.. I don't use blenders particle because it is processor intencive.. but also said, what you have is impressive from my point of view... could you post a image with ZT on so I could have a peak? I would like to compair it to my own versions and see if their is something I can do to help my stuff or yours!

I thiiiiink this image had zt on, but I can't remember for sure. I'll be playing with it and rendering more here soon. I just got a new desk and chair, and I'm hoping it's gonna make for a good change. Right now my 'puter's scattered to the four corners of the wind, so it'll be a while.
