I was going to post about Saint Peter myself, then I saw your post and wanted to correct it to mention Saint Peter instead, and then I discover that Saint Peter is, in fact, considered to be the first Pope. And so I learned a thing today that I didn't expect! It's not a symbol of the position itself, though, just Saint Peter.
