We were out of Wypalls the day I drew this, so I used what might as well have been toilet paper. Again, this was done during my shift, it gets pretty boring waiting for customers sometimes. Everyone who's seen this (I accidentally left it in a drawer instead of taking it home, and it took me a day or so to remember to grab it on my way out) thinks it's pretty amazing, but really, I just scribbled without using any kind of reference or any kind of plan or knowledge of what I was even doing. Squiggle squiggle OK THOSE LOOK LEAFY ENOUGH.
I'd like to think I'm some super awesome artist who can blow everyone away, but I'm really not. :P It's just that people get surprised when they see I can doodle more than just stick figures and sloppy handwriting, probably because you wouldn't expect something like that out of someone who stands around all day asking "Hi, may I help you?" I guess that's true for most people who work retail, because I highly doubt anyone applies for those jobs out of a legitimate enjoyment with serving random people every day.
Artists, screen writers, authors, engineers, programmers, all sorts of skilled people working mundane jobs where you're forced to bend to the whims of a range of awesome customers to really crappy customers. Nobody would ever know what you're capable of, nor would they expect it out of you, nor would they probably even care, because after all, we're all just sprites working behind the counter, not actual people with interests and hobbies, right?
Retail is a really strange field, because you'll never see anything the same way again. It gives you a perspective on what it really means to be a customer, and who it really is ringing you up, giving you your food, walking you to the printer aisle, etc. I'm just one person... but how many others have drawn a tree among the hours they spend just standing around waiting for something to happen? What do they really want to make? Is it really just a tree? Or is the tree only there to save them from time that otherwise would've been burnt doing nothing?
"tree.jpg" is just because I kinda liked how the tree was coming out, and I wanted to leave part of the gesture there so I could remember how to do it. :P
