I find the wings of this dragonfly to be the most striking part of the image, how they transition from firey yellow and black to transparency.

When you can find a whole new world to photograph - say at your back yard, when you might have thought you've already seen everything.. in a word I guess one could say, 'yes' :) It gives you a rather different kind of a perspective.
In this particular case I believe it was a combination of Canon EOS 7D + Sigma 150mm f/2.8.

Yeah. When I got my reversing ring to play around with that is exactly how I felt. Especially after taking shots like this: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/11009160/
I really like where Sigma is going these days! Their new 18-25mm f1.8 seems to be absolutely amazing! They even released a lens adapter so that you can hook up some of their lenses to your PC to finetune them to your liking! You can adjust the AF speed (slower AF for more precise focus for example), how the AF behaves at certain focal lengths and so on and so forth. Very impressive!

Yay dragonflies :)
What draws you to them in particular? I've found it quite interesting how they can hover and quickly change directions, not to mention the variety of colors and patterns they come in.
Also there's actually some neat work being done to try and replicate the way they fly, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nj1yhz5io20

I've always adored them. Used to save tem from drowning in swimming pools as a kid,and sort of adopted them as a real totem creature. My katana and wakizashi for Katori Shinto Ryu are dragonfly themed. But i love their grace, their colours, and the ecstatic way they fly.
I used to raise the nymphs in little pools in my garden. Must get back to doing that again. My own dragonflies I'd raised would zoom about the garden.
I have a dragonfly character we've been messing about wth in a little short film.

(Did you see the idiotic orchid mantis costume I made, BTW?)
