Always wanted to do a pleasure island illustration thingy. I actually had something a bit more extravagant in mind for the coloring, but i got kinda bored, so meh.

Actually, that's not canon; according to Carlo Collodi's original, the transformed boys retain their full human intelligence, but are completely incapable of speech, locked within the body of a donkey.
Which, let's face it, is worse. Particylarly since the only reason Pinocchio gets changed back (in the book) is because he's made of wood, and is thus unpalatable to the meat-eating fish that devour the donkey shape from around him.

IMO, it depends on what becomes of them after. If they can never be human again, will never see their friends or family again and will have to live as donkeys for the rest of their lives, it might be cruel for them to retain their human minds. Ignorance is bliss after all.
However, if they end up totally donkey in mind, it's a form of death but it might be better for them as they really wouldn't understand what's happened to them. Though it's sort of a finality. With donkey minds, it sort of solidifies the loss of hope for them (unless you can restore their human minds).
But for me, being able to explore that form with my human intelligence and memories intact would be kinda cool.

Wow! This is just awesome. I love Pinocchio inspired TF. Kids into donkeys. That's what started a lot of TFlers fantasies and what's better then boys becoming donkeys, hehe. Well catgirls maybe. ;)
