Omg I forgot to respond to this, and I just remembered your question!
I try to stick to thinner yarns, of course, for smaller projects. I tend to use a lot of Simply Soft for smaller projects. The hook I like to use with it (I've got it in my lap as I type) is an F hook. I think that translates to 4.00mm, but I'm not positive. The hook I use for larger things is a 5.00mm hook.
Basically small yarn, small hook, and a lot of patience :x I try to be extra gentle, too. With the smaller stitches, I feel like any excess tugging would make it warp more than something larger/sturdier.
