This was one of a set of photos taken in 2004 by the late Gerald Perkins at Alum Rock Park in San Jose. The object was to produce a portrait suitable for printing and framing as a Christmas gift for my mother—and for her mother, who at the time was suffering from terminal cancer. Since I live and work several hundred miles away, making it impossible to be around, I felt that having a picture was better than nothing. I wanted a picture of professional caliber, and Gerald delivered, bless his heart. Of course, he was a semipro photographer, and he understood the essential secret of getting a good photo: keep clicking away until you have a nice wide variety from which to choose. This image was the final choice, and two prints were duly printed, matted, framed, and gift-wrapped.

Thanks so much! I’m very proud of the hair and beard; they are my one great vanity—the hair now falls to the base of my shoulder blades, and it shows chocolate-colored highlights in sunlight. (The photo was taken on a cloudy day.) I blush as well, and I really appreciate the compliments! I also really enjoy the petting. . . .
When I was a teenager, back in the 1970s, it wasn’t this long; instead it was just long enough to look awful, with these terrible flippy half-curls. When I was out on my own, I decided to grow it out, on the hunch that it would look better. I think it does—and so do most of the women I know.
You shaved yours off? Good heavens! What is it you have in mind? I’m not sure I know what a “Chealsey” (Chelsey?) is.
And you can pet me all you want. I’m a sucker for blushes. . . .
