I can remember my first day of school EVER, which was at about age five. I was attending preschool in the year 1996 in Sandusky rather than Deckerville (they are about twelve miles apart) because Sandusky, at the time, was the only school that had a full day special education program. Plus, it was close in proximity to the Sanilac County Intermediate School District. One of the best memories I had that year was when I would ride the bus home and there was a high school student riding as well (seventeen at the time, thirty-five now). He seemed really understanding of my situation and we would talk a little bit to pass the time.
The reason why I needed to go to special education was because I had a case of autism. I had already had therapy before school started, and the special education for me continued until the third grade, when I was ready to challenge myself in the real world. That propelled me through high school (4.00 GPA) and still does today.

Aww, for all the worry, I'm sure he'll be just fine! ^_^
Also, Gem, just as a minor critique...The school bus has no door, which means it's probably on the other side. The other side of the bus is out towards the street - I've never seen kids board a school bus from anywhere but a sidewalk/curb/safe part of a street. Maybe the crossing guard is around somewhere? My mind just tends to go towards the negatives with kids + streets...

I don't remember my first ever day of school. I remember drawing macaroni. Also gluing macaroni to construction paper. But I don't think that was on the first day.
Anyway, I like this picture, and his expression, and the background is well done -- it explains the situation without words (well, I wouldn't get that it was his first day of school, but I'd easily get that he's going to school).
