Aaaancient history. First sketched sometime in '84 or '85, inked about a year later, then colored and placed as my first art show entry ever in '88. Marker, colored pencil, inks and naivete. Waaay back when most folks in fandom didn't even know the word 'furry' this was the only thing of its kind in the Necronomicon art show. No bidders, of course, but it did end up with Mary Hanson-Roberts seeking me out to chat with me and talk about critter characters. And that discussion led to her introducing me to Andre Norton, the grand dame. That had repercussions, you bet. When your first 'public appearance' leads to much 'WTF?!' attitude (Not that that expression would be coined for another decade and change) from the audience, having someone like Andre Norton tell you that they like it and to keep at it will make an impression on a young fellow.
This is probably the oldest piece of work you'll ever see me post.

This doesn't qualify as a random pinup?
I don't know where you look at most of your furry art, but there are some WONDERFUL things out there which are not 'mindless fucking', etc. Even on FA, every day a great many things get posted that aren't pinups, porn, and the like.
Just one of my favorite places to go to find wonderful furry stuff that is MUCH more interesting and not at all porny or pinuppy is yquestionmark.com
I really, really highly recommend it. And look around! Trust me, there's so much MORE of that stuff out there now!
'Back to a time', there were a bunch of animator types hiding their porn sketches from their bosses, and there were a TON of pinups and people who did the pinups and were nervous about censure were HORRIFIED when Reed Waller did his first pre-Omaha porn strips.
I honestly believe that the genre' is far more varied now than it was, back then. It has to be, doesn't it? There are hundreds of fantastic artists, thousands of artists in the fandom. NO other fandom I know of encourages its members so much to create.
That's got to be a good thing, I think.

"...but we're also now a fandom that encourages spooge and attention whoring, instant gratification and the selling of commissions, more heavily than stories and content."
'Now'? We were then, too. Because that was what the fans paid more money for. However, the most famous and popular characters (mine and other peoples') tend to be those that have backstory and known characters well beyond their visual portraits.
And dude...If you'd known the people around me at the time(and likely me at the time) 'well adjusted' is not what you would have called us. We had our share and then some of pedantic pissants, overactive and indiscriminate perverts, social buffoons and incompetents.
I was usually trying to learn things from my art, how to do certain things better (textures, fabric drape, what have you). I never got into the 'churn it out in five mintues and slap a price on it' mindset. But believe me, there were plenty of those people around. Just to name two at random, look up how long Steve Martin, or Brian O'Connell have been in the fandom. Then look through the furry urban legendaria about their past escapades. I guarantee you some of it is true, and there are probably worse things that are true that aren't known at large.
I'm happy that you like art that people have put effort into. :) I just think you have some idea of a 'golden age' of the fandom that, like most 'golden ages' of the past was actually a pretty shitty mess at the time to the people in it. ;)

If I were really daring, I could post some of my extremely early (awful) stuff. :) But this is a nice refresher of back when the fandom was young and I was enjoying it more...And, what I miss most, when stuff just seemed to flow onto the paper instead of me having to beat my head against it until blood spots formed.
Geeze! I was barely 6 years old when you started that picture Zjonni... You ain't a veteran in the fandom fer nothin'. =3
It's a very good picture as well, indicitive of the fantasy artwork style of the early to mid '80's. =3
*ChaosCat, glad for the little trip into the archives you provided*

Heh. Yeah, it kinda is for nothin'. At least, nobody charged me extra for being born at the tail end of the hot part of the Cold War. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't know if it is 'indicative'. Quite a few artists of the time are still around. Ken Sample, Steve Martin, Steve Gallacci, Monika Livingston, to name just a few.
Wow....I probably wasn't even around when you made this.
I'm not poking fun or trying to be disrespectful, but seeing your uploads is like looking back in time and seeing the founding of a movement... That's why I like watching you. Nowhere else do I get to hear all the inside details of the history of "modern furry."
Thanks for sharing once again!

And over here, representing the cretaceous epoch...
I am a fossil. I was just having a talk with my girlfriend and one of the things that came up was that my standards of behaviore are about two centuries out of date...Which can really annoy some people.
'Ladies and gentlemen'...That's what they open the circus with, right? What's it meeeeeeean?
Oh, about 'modern furry'...You know about the ancient furry, right? The Lascaux Sorciere'(sp?)? ;)
Animal-form roots do run deep. I'm not sure you can call this modern mess a 'movement', though. It isn't really moving anywhere as far as I can tell, just sort of eddying around a deep pit of drama most of the time.

A fossil? Surely you jest :)
Ah, sorry to sound like an ignoramous by making a reference to "the founding" of the movement like that.... I was more refering to the variety of "furry" we are oh-so familiar with today. I myself consider it another step in what is a long history, as animation, drafting, and cartooning techinques of the 20th century have quite visibly made a significant impact upon the facade of the "movement".
Haha, yes I know about "ancient furry" too. I have long pondered the thought, the historical and cultural roots. So many religions, cultural beliefs, age-old folklores, all featuring images and tales of anthromorphic beings, often as sacred deities. Oh yes, it runs deep, and most people don't even realize that it completely surrounds us in modern society...
As for "movement"... Well, perhaps not a progressive movement, but it can be classified as having a following, and calling it an "art dealie thing that people sometimes do" just doesn't have the same ring :)

Didn't think you sounded like an ignoramus at all. We just view this thing a little differently, and I was tossing my views your way. :)
I usually just refer to it as a fringe culture of general fandom. But when I think 'movement' I think of things like what Gandhi or Martin Luther King, jr managed to propagate. Sweeping societal consciousness of some goal that the society then enacts change to achieve.
And well, furry fandom just isn't even all in the same book, much less the same page... :) Sometimes it is very hard to find what two furries have in common other than that they both consider themselves 'furry'.

Hours and hours and days of colored pencil grinding. SOme of that texture is probably mounds of wax on the paper. XD Looking back, I just wish my anatomy were better. The back...Ouch. Not good.
'One of the first' on some scale, I suppose. There were only a dozen-and-change 'furry artists' back in the day who thought of themselves AS such, rather than 'animators hiding this stuff from their boss'.
But you know, I betcha there are 18th and 19th century woodcuts someplace of bellydancing vixens. There's an awful lot of stuff like that around, honestly, that nobody sees anymore because we know how to print photographs now...And talking animals in human clothing is for children.
Right? ;)

She was a wonderful person, also. I felt very privileged to meet her, not simply because of who she was, but because of how she acted. She was like everyone's favorite grandmother. The one who always had cookies on hand and a smile. I haven't read anything by her I didn't enjoy.
Lol.I need to read moer of her books thats for sure. I've read mainly her collabs with other authors and not much that was primarily hers. If you have recomendations let me know, I'm always ont eh look out for a good book!
This picture here has an awesome story behind it!! I would definately be treasuring this one !! Not to mention it's lovely!

Her 'Witch World' saga is probably her best known. If you like science fiction, some of my older favorites by her are 'The Zero Stone' and its sequel 'Uncharted Stars'. Then there's 'Mark of the Cat', 'Star Man's Son', and many, many others. She was a VERY prolific writer.
