I like sketches more, too, to tell the truth.

Have you tried coloring yoru pencils with an overlay layer? Since lots of values are in teh middle, it might work. The result should be interesting.

No, I have never used an overlay layer. The only way I know to color pencil drawings is by putting the drawing on a multiply layer.

What I had in mind: leave the pencils on background, but put the color on the overlay layer above it. That way you'll be coloring the pencil lines themselves, more like adding a tint, than fully covering. Should work good for preserving the texture of the pencil drawing.
