Wouldn't liver failure be something his sister prevents? I thought that's why he had been able to be on a liquid diet for so many years.

No she's keeping his heart and lungs functioning, Hector often makes mention of the fact she keeps him breathing, he's speaking literally. He has the liver of a dragon via a transplant he got several centuries ago. His sister would have to get another one from a dragon (in another dimension, the one the world is set it doesn't have true dragons) if it turns out to be liver failure.

Not totally due to the alcohol this time, I'd think. His liver has had to deal with several toxins of late, such as the bad elderberries and the sirenidae spike poison and the weaponized plague virus. That's a lot of junk to handle in a short period of time.

So many reasons that this could happen...... just wonder what has triggered this present state.... hopefully it is one of the reversible causes..... either way at least hector is used to pain as a constant companion so he is prepared for what is coming.....
